וַיְהִי הַגּוֹרָל לְמַטֵּה בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם אֶל־גְּבוּל אֱדוֹם מִדְבַּר־צִן נֶגְבָּה מִקְצֵה תֵימָן׃ 15:1
Josh. 15:1 And the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah was according to their families to the border of Edom, the wilderness of Zin, southward, from the uttermost part of the south.
וַיְהִי לָהֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב מִקְצֵה יָם הַמֶּלַח מִן־הַלָּשֹׁן הַפֹּנֶה נֶגְבָּה׃ 15:2
Josh. 15:2 And the southern border for them was from the uttermost part of the Sea of Salt, from the bay that faced southward.
וְיָצָא אֶל־מִנֶּגֶב לְמַעֲלֵה עַקְרַבִּים וְעָבַר צִנָה וְעָלָה מִנֶּגֶב לְקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ וְעָבַר חֶצְרוֹן וְעָלָה אַדָּרָה 15:3
וְנָסַב הַקַּרְקָעָה׃
Josh. 15:3 And it would go out to from the south of the ascent of Akrabbim and cross to Zin and rise from the south at Kadesh-barnea and cross Hezron and rise to Addar and turn toward Karka.
וְעָבַר עַצְמוֹנָה וְיָצָא נַחַל מִצְרַיִם (והיה) [וְהָיוּ] תֹּצְאוֹת הַגְּבוּל יָמָּה זֶה־יִהְיֶה לָכֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב׃ 15:4
Josh. 15:4 Then it would cross to Azmon and go out of the Brook of Egypt; and the extensions of the territory would be to the sea. This shall be your southern border.
I find several peculiarities in this verse. More>>
וּגְבוּל קֵדְמָה יָם הַמֶּלַח עַד־קְצֵה הַיַּרְדֵּן וּגְבוּל לִפְאַת צָפוֹנָה מִלְּשׁוֹן הַיָּם מִקְצֵה הַיַּרְדֵּן׃ 15:5
Josh. 15:5 And the border on the east would be the sea of Salt as far as the end of the Jordan, and the border pointing to the north would be from the bay of the sea from the end of the Jordan.
וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל בֵּית חָגְלָה וְעָבַר מִצְּפוֹן לְבֵית הָעֲרָבָה וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל אֶבֶן בֹּהַן בֶּן־רְאוּבֵן׃ 15:6
Josh. 15:6 And the border would rise to Beth-haglah and cross from the north of Beth-arabah; and the border would rise to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל דְּבִרָה מֵעֵמֶק עָכוֹר וְצָפוֹנָה פֹּנֶה אֶל־הַגִּלְגָּל אֲשֶׁר־נֹכַח לְמַעֲלֵה אֲדֻמִּים אֲשֶׁר מִנֶּגֶב 15:7
לַנָּחַל וְעָבַר הַגְּבוּל אֶל־מֵי־עֵין שֶׁמֶשׁ וְהָיוּ תֹצְאֹתָיו אֶל־עֵין רֹגֵל׃
Josh. 15:7 Then the border would rise to Debir from the valley of Achor and be turning to the north toward Gilgal, that is in front of the ascent of Adummim, which is from the south to the Brook; then the border would cross to the waters En-shemesh, and its extensions would be to En-rogel. וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל גֵּי בֶן־הִנֹּם אֶל־כֶּתֶף הַיְבוּסִי מִנֶּגֶב הִיא יְרוּשָׁלִָם וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל אֶל־רֹאשׁ הָהָר אֲשֶׁר 15:8
עַל־פְּנֵי גֵי־הִנֹּם יָמָּה אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה עֵמֶק־רְפָאִים צָפֹנָה׃
Josh. 15:8 And the border would ge up the valley of the son of Hinnom to the edge of the Jebusite from the south -- the same is Jerusalem -- and the border would rise to the top of the mountain that overlooks the Valley of Hinnom, which is on the edge of the valley of Rephaim to the north.
וְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל מֵרֹאשׁ הָהָר אֶל־מַעְיַן מֵי נֶפְתּוֹחַ וְיָצָא אֶל־עָרֵי הַר־עֶפְרוֹן וְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל בַּעֲלָה 15:9
הִיא קִרְיַת יְעָרִים׃
Josh. 15:9 And the border would extend from the top of the mountain to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoach and go out to the cities of Mount Ephron; then the border would extend to Baalah -- the same is Kiriath-jearim.
וְנָסַב הַגְּבוּל מִבַּעֲלָה יָמָּה אֶל־הַר שֵׂעִיר וְעָבַר אֶל־כֶּתֶף הַר־יְעָרִים מִצָּפוֹנָה הִיא כְסָלוֹן וְיָרַד 15:10
בֵּית־שֶׁמֶשׁ וְעָבַר תִּמְנָה׃
Josh. 15:10 Then the border would turn around from Baalah to the west to Mount Seir and cross to the side of Mount Jearim from the north -- the same is Chesalon -- and go down to Beth-shemesh and pass Timnah.
וְיָצָא הַגְּבוּל אֶל־כֶּתֶף עֶקְרוֹן צָפוֹנָה וְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל שִׁכְּרוֹנָה וְעָבַר הַר־הַבַּעֲלָה וְיָצָא יַבְנְאֵל וְהָיוּ 15:11
תֹּצְאוֹת הַגְּבוּל יָמָּה׃
Josh. 15:11 And the border would go out to the side of Ekron to the north, and the border would extend to Shikkeron and cross the Mount of Baalah and go out at Jabneel; and the extensions of the border would be to the sea.
וּגְבוּל יָם הַיָּמָּה הַגָּדוֹל וּגְבוּל זֶה גְּבוּל בְּנֵי־יְהוּדָה סָבִיב לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃ 15:12
Josh. 15:12 And the western border would be the Great Sea. And this border was the border of the children of Judah all around according to their families.
וּלְכָלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה נָתַן חֵלֶק בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי־יְהוּדָה אֶל־פִּי יְהוָה לִיהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶת־קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע אֲבִי הָעֲנָק 15:13
הִיא חֶבְרוֹן׃
Josh. 15:13 And he gave a portion to Caleb son of Jephunneh among the children of Judah, by the word of the Lord to Joshua, Kiriath-arba -- father of Anak -- the same is Hebron.
Something interesting happens here. We are not told who the “he,” the second word in the English, is. We will find later in Judges ! that it is Judah. Now see the discussion following v. 15:15
וַיֹּרֶשׁ מִשָּׁם כָּלֵב אֶת־שְׁלוֹשָׁה בְּנֵי הָעֲנָק אֶת־שֵׁשַׁי וְאֶת־אֲחִימַן וְאֶת־תַּלְמַי יְלִידֵי הָעֲנָק׃ 15:14
Josh. 15:14 And Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, born of Anak, from there.
וַיַּעַל מִשָּׁם אֶל־יֹשְׁבֵי דְּבִר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִר לְפָנִים קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר׃ 15:15
Josh. 15:15 And he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir -- now the name of Debir before this was Kiriath-sepher.
This verse and the next few are repeated in Judges 1, almost word for word in the Hebrew. There this narrative follows a different introduction. It’s as if the scribe wanted to correct the oversight here in not naming Judah. [Return to Judg. 1:12]
וַיֹּאמֶר כָּלֵב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר וּלְכָדָהּ וְנָתַתִּי לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתִּי לְאִשָּׁה׃ 15:16
Josh. 15:16 Then Caleb said, “Who will smite Kiriath-sepher and take it, then I will give to him Achsah, my daughter, for a wife.”
וַיִּלְכְּדָהּ עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז אֲחִי כָלֵב וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתּוֹ לְאִשָּׁה׃ 15:17
Josh. 15:17 And Othniel son of Kenaz, a relative of Caleb, took it, and he gave Achsah, his daughter, to him for a wife.
וַיְהִי בְּבוֹאָהּ וַתְּסִיתֵהוּ לִשְׁאוֹל מֵאֵת־אָבִיהָ שָׂדֶה וַתִּצְנַח מֵעַל הַחֲמוֹר וַיֹּאמֶר־לָהּ כָּלֵב מַה־לָּךְ׃ 15:18
Josh. 15:18 And it came to pass when she came, that she persuaded him to ask a field from her father, and she came down from off the ass, and Caleb said to her, “What will be for you?”
וַתֹּאמֶר תְּנָה־לִּי בְרָכָה כִּי אֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב נְתַתָּנִי וְנָתַתָּה לִי גֻּלֹּת מָיִם וַיִּתֶּן־לָהּ אֵת גֻּלֹּת עִלִּיּוֹת וְאֵת 15:19
גֻּלֹּת תַּחְתִּיּוֹת׃
Josh. 15:19 And she said, “Give a gift to me for the land of the south you have sent me to, and give to me springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
זֹאת נַחֲלַת מַטֵּה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃ 15:20
Josh. 15:20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
וַיִּהְיוּ הֶעָרִים מִקְצֵה לְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה אֶל־גְּבוּל אֱדוֹם בַּנֶּגְבָּה קַבְצְאֵל וְעֵדֶר וְיָגוּר׃ 15:21
Josh. 15:21 And the cities of the uttermost part of the tribe were of the children of Judah to the border of Edom; in the south of it were Kabzeel and Eder and Jagur
וְקִינָה וְדִימוֹנָה וְעַדְעָדָה׃ 15:22
Josh. 15:22 and Kinah and Dimonah and Adadah
וְקֶדֶשׁ וְחָצוֹר וְיִתְנָן׃ 15:23
Josh. 15:23 and Kedesh and Hazor,
זִיף וָטֶלֶם וּבְעָלוֹת׃ 15:24

Josh. 15:62 and Nibshan and the City of Salt and En-gedi; six cities plus their villages.
וְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִי יוֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם לֹא־יוכלו בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה לְהוֹרִישָׁם וַיֵּשֶׁב הַיְבוּסִי אֶת־בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה 15:63
בִּירוּשָׁלִַם עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃
Josh. 15:63 And the Jebusite inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah were not able to drive them out, so the Jebusite has dwelled with the children of Judah in Jerusalem until this day.
