This chapter and the next three comprise a series of dire prophesies about an apocalyptic world, but they end on an encouraging and uplifting note.
Isai. 24:1 Behold, the Lord is making the land empty
And making waste, and perverting its surface
And scattering its inhabitants.
Isai. 24:2 And it shall be,
As the people, so the priest;
As the servant, so his master;
As the maid, so her mistress;
As the buyer, so the seller;
As the lender, so the borrower;
As the debtor, so who lends to him.
Isai. 24:3 The land shall be utterly emptied and utterly spoiled,
For the Lord speaks this word.
Isai. 24:4 The land languishes, laments, falls away,
The world falls away.
The lofty of the people of the land languish.
Isai. 24:5 And the land is defiled beneath its inhabitants,
For they have transgressed laws,
Ignored statute,
Broken the everlasting covenant.
Isai. 24:6 Therefore a curse is devouring the earth,
As the inhabitants on it have been found guilty.
Therefore the inhabitants of the earth dry up,
And the remnants of men are few.
Isai. 24:7 The new wine fails,
The vine fades.
All the merry of heart sigh.
Isai. 24:8 The mirth of timbrels ceases,
The noise of the rejoicers ends,
The joy of the harp ceases.
Isai. 24:9 They will not drink wine with song;
Strong drink will be bitter to its drinkers.
Isai. 24:10 The city of vanity is torn.
Every house is closed at the entrance.
Isai. 24:11 Crying over the wine is in the streets.
All joy is darkened;
Departed is the mirth of the land.
Isai. 24:12 Desolation and ruin will be left in the city;
The market place will be smitten.
Isai. 24:13 For thus shall it be in the midst of the earth,
Among the peoples,
Like the shaking of an olive tree
At the gleaning when the vintage is done.
Isai. 24:14 They shall raise their voices, sing for joy.
In the majesty of the Lord,
They shout from the sea.
Isai. 24:15 Therefore with fires they glorify the Lord
On the islands of the sea,
The name of the Lord, God of Israel.
Isai. 24:16 From the edge of the earth,
We hear songs of the glory of righteousness.
But I say, “I waste away, I waste away: woe to me!”
The treacherous do treacherously.
Yes, the treacherous do very treacherously.
Isai. 24:17 Terror and pit and snare are upon you, inhabitant of the earth.
Isai. 24:18 So it shall be,
Who flees from the sound of the terror
Shall fall down to the pit,
And who escapes from the midst of the pit
Will be caught in the trap.
For the windows from on high have been opened,
And the foundations of the earth shake.
Isai. 24:19 The earth breaks, crushes.
The earth crumbles, breaks apart.
The earth trembles, collapses.
Isai. 24:20 The motion of the earth wavers like a drunk
And it oscillates like a lodge,
So heavy upon it is its transgression,
And it will fall and not continue to endure.
Isai. 24:21 So it will be in that day,
The Lord shall visit judgment
On the host of the heights on high,
And on the kings of the earth upon the earth,
Isai. 24:22 And they shall be gathered together by the pit
And shut up by the prison,
That from an abundance of days
They might perish.
Isai. 24:23 And the moon will be confounded,
And the sun ashamed,
For the Lord of hosts will be King
On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And glory shall be before His elders.
