[Go Bottom]

Gene. 41:1  And it was at the end of two full years that Pharoah dreamed, and behold, he was standing by the River

Gene. 41:2  and, behold, from the River seven cows were arising, fair of appearance and fat of flesh, and they fed among the bullrushes.

Gene. 41:3  And behold, seven other cows were arising after them from the River, unpleasant of appearance and lean of flesh, and they stood near the cows at the edge of the river.

Gene. 41:4  Then the unpleasant-appearing and lean-fleshed cows, ate up the seven pleasant-appearing and fatted cows.  And Pharoah awoke.

Gene. 41:5  And he fell asleep and dreamed again.  And behold, seven plump and good ears of corn were rising up on one stalk.

Gene. 41:6  And behold, seven ears of corn, lean and east wind scorched, were springing up after them.

Gene. 41:7  Then the lean ears of corn swallowed up the seven plump and full ears of corn.  Then Pharoah awoke and behold, a dream.

Gene. 41:8  And it happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men, and Pharoah told his dream to them, but there was no interpreting them for Pharoah.

There is some interesting and informative Hebrew in this verse that has come up for the first time, so I will discuss them at this point in the translation.     More >>

Gene. 41:9  Then the chief of the cupbearers spoke with Pharoah saying, “I am remembering my sin today.”

Gene. 41:10   “Pharoah was angry with his servants and put me in the prison of the captain of the guard, me and the chief of the bakers.”

Gene. 41:11   “And we could dream a dream during one night, I and he; each one by the interpretation of his dream we dreamed.”

Gene. 41:12   “And a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant to the captain of the guard, and we were able to tell him, and he interpreted our dreams for us; each man according to his dream he interpreted.”

Gene. 41:13   “And it happened, as he interpreted for us, so it was.  It caused me to be restored to my office and him to be hanged.”

Gene. 41:14   So Pharoah sent and called Joseph and they quickly got him from the dungeon.  And he shaved and changed his clothing and he came to Pharoah.

Gene. 41:15   And Pharoah said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream and there is no interpreting it, and I have heard about you saying you can understand a dream to interpret it.”

Gene. 41:16   And Joseph answered Pharoah saying, “It is not I.  God will answer Pharoah with accuracy.”

Gene. 41:17   And Pharoah spoke to Joseph:  “In my dream, behold, I was standing at the edge of the River.”

Gene. 41:18   “And behold, from the River were arising seven cows, fat of flesh and fair of appearance, and they fed among the  bulrushes.”

Gene. 41:19   And behold, seven other cows were arising after them, poor and very unpleasant of appearance and lean of flesh.  I have not seen such as these in all the land of Egypt for bad quality.”

Gene. 41:20   “And the lean and unpleasant cows ate up the first seven fat cows.”

Gene. 41:21   “When they finished them, then it was not obvious that they had finished them, as they were still as unpleasant as in the beginning.  Then I must have awakened.”

From this verse, it would appear that Pharoah realized he’d awakened between dreams.  But in the next verse he makes it sound as if he thought the dreams were one, not two.  Or perhaps he recognized that they both conveyed the same message, whatever that was.

This verse also contains the word I thought might have been more appropriately begun Gene. 1:1.  The word is second from the end of the verse, בַּתְּחִלָּה, translated as in the beginning or at the beginning.  Refer to my remarks in Gene. 1:1 Notes.

Gene. 41:22   “Then I could see in my dream and behold, seven ears of corn, full and good, were arising on one stalk.”

Gene. 41:23   “And behold, seven ears of corn, withered, thin, east wind scorched, were springing up after them.”

Gene. 41:24   “Then the thin ears of corn swallowed up the seven good ears of corn.  So I told to the magicians, and there was no explaining to me.”

Gene. 41:25   And Joseph said to Pharoah, “The dream of Pharoah is one.  That which He Who is God is doing, He has told to Pharoah.”

Gene. 41:26   “The seven good cows, they shall be seven years, and the seven ears of good corn, they shall be seven years.  It is one dream.”

Gene. 41:27   “And the seven lean and unpleasant cows that were rising up after them, they shall be seven years, and the seven ears of emaciated, east wind scorched corn, they shall be seven years of famine.”

Gene. 41:28   “It is the thing that I spoke to Pharoah:  What He Who is God is doing, He has caused Pharoah to see.”

Gene. 41:29   “Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the whole land of Egypt.”

Gene. 41:30   “Then seven years of famine will arise after them and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt and the famine will consume the land.”

Gene. 41:31   “And the plenty shall not be discerned in the land because of the famine that will come after it, for it will be very severe.”

Gene. 41:32   “So thus was doubled the dream twice for Pharoah.  Because the thing is established from He Who is God, so before long will He Who is God be doing it.”

Gene. 41:33   “And now let Pharoah consider a prudent and wise man that he appoint him to be over the land of Egypt.”

Gene. 41:34   “Let Pharoah do it so that he appoints overseers over the land, then let him tax the land of Egypt a fifth in the seven years of abundance

Gene. 41:35   “that they gather all the food of these coming good years and lay up the food grain under the hand of Pharoah in the cities, and let them preserve it.”

Gene. 41:36   “And the food shall be for a store for the land for the seven years of famine that will exist in the land of Egypt, so the land will not perish during the famine.”

Gene. 41:37   And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharoah and in the eyes of all his servants.

Gene. 41:38   And Pharoah said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the spirit of God?”

Gene. 41:39   Then Pharoah said to Joseph, “Forasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is none as prudent and wise as you.”

Gene. 41:40   “You will be over my house, and by your mouth shall all my people be ruled.  Only the throne will be greater than you.”

Gene. 41:41   And Pharoah said to Joseph, “Indeed I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”

Gene. 41:42   And Pharoah removed his signet ring from his hand and put it on the hand of Joseph and clothed him in robes of fine linen and put a chain of gold on his neck.

Gene. 41:43   And he made him to ride in the second chariot that was his, and it was proclaimed:  “Kneel before him!”  And he set him over all the land of Egypt.

Gene. 41:44   And Pharoah said to Joseph, “I am Pharoah, and no man shall raise his hand or his foot without you in all the land of Egypt.”

Gene. 41:45   And Pharoah called the name of Joseph Zaphenath Paneah and gave him Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, priest of On.  And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

Gene. 41:46   And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharoah, king of Egypt.  And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharoah and passed through all the land of Egypt.

Gene. 41:47   And the earth produced by heaps in the seven years of abundance.

Gene. 41:48   And he gathered all the food of the seven years that was in the land of Egypt and laid up the food in the cities; the food of the field at the city that it surrounded was laid up in its midst.

Gene. 41:49   And Joseph gathered up grain as the sand of the sea, exceedingly great, until they indeed ceased to count, for there was no number.

Gene. 41:50   As for Joseph, before the year of the famine would come, he begot two sons, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, priest of On, bore for him.

So Joseph’s two sons were born five, six or seven years into the time of plenty.  That would make Joseph between 35 and 37 years old at the time.

Gene. 41:51   And Joseph called the name of the first born Menasseh, for “God has made me forget all my toil and all the house of my father.”

The name Menasseh means causing to forget or making forget. It could also mean Causer of forgetting, directly relating the name to God.

Gene. 41:52   And he called the name of the second Ephraim, for “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

The name Ephraim is said to mean I will be doubly fruitful.  For the word will, we can substitute may, must, or can.  I prefer the translation I must be doubly fruitful, as that seems to reflect Joseph’s own words more closely and relates this name also more closely to God.

Gene. 41:53   And the seven years of abundance that existed in the land of Egypt ended.

Gene. 41:54   Then the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had promised.  And a famine existed in all the lands, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.

Gene. 41:55   When all the land of Egypt was famished, then the people cried out to Pharoah for bread.  Then Pharoah said to all of Egypt, “Go to Joseph.  You must do what he will say to you.”

Gene. 41:56   And the famine was over the entire surface of the land, so Joseph opened all that were among them and sold the grain to the Egyptians.  And the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.

There are a number of alternative translations for a part of this verse.  Where I have “… Joseph opened all that were among them …” -- which is a literal translation -- others have, for example, “… Joseph opened all the storehouses ….”  I believe that the Hebrew words meaning all that were among them indeed refers to the (implied) storehouses, but the pronoun them refers back to the people and the Egyptians mentioned in the previous two verses.

Gene. 41:57   And all of the land came into Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe throughout all the land.

Genesis 41
