וְאֵלֶּה תֹּלְדוֹת עֵשָׂו הוּא אֱדוֹם 36:1
Gene. 36:1 Now these are the generations of Esau, that is, of Edom.
We were first informed that Esau was the father of the Edomites in Gene. 25:30. Here we are reminded of that fact.
עֵשָׂו לָקַח אֶת נָשָׁיו מִבְּנוֹת כְּנָעַן אֶת עָדָה בַּת אֵילוֹן הַחִתִּי וְאֶת אָהֳלִיבָמָה בַּת עֲנָה בַּת צִבְעוֹן 36:2

Gene. 36:2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah, the daughter of Elon, the Hittite, and Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, the Hivite,
וְאֶת בָּשְׂמַת בַּת יִשְׁמָעֵאל אֲחוֹת נְבָיוֹת 36:3
Gene. 36:3 and Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, the sister of Nebaioth.
Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, the sister of Nebaioth, has been mentioned before this in Gene. 28:9. However, there she was named Mahalath. More >>
וַתֵּלֶד עָדָה לְעֵשָׂו אֶת אֱלִיפָז וּבָשְׂמַת יָלְדָה אֶת רְעוּאֵל 36:4
Gene. 36:4 And Adah bore for Esau Eliphaz, and Basemath bore Reuel,
וְאָהֳלִיבָמָה יָלְדָה אֶת יעיּשׁ וְאֶת יַעְלָם וְאֶת קֹרַח אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי עֵשָׂו אֲשֶׁר יֻלְּדוּ לוֹ בְּאֶרֶץ 36:5
כְּנָעַן
Gene. 36:5 and Aholibamah bore Jeush and Jalam and Korah. These are the sons of Esau that were born to him in the land of Canaan.
The name יעיּשׁ, Jeush, the fourth word in the verse, is thought to contain an error. The second yad in the word is thought to be a vav in the “correct” spelling. The name in either form appears in the bible six times, three times with this spelling (this verse, v. 36:14, and 1Chr 7:10) and three places with what is thought to be the correct spelling (v. 36:18, 1Chr 8:39, and 2Chr 11:19), but the last two references are to different individuals than the one named here. Thus it appears three times with this spelling and once with the alternate spelling. It is difficult for me to conclude that this spelling is indeed in error. [Return to v. 36:14]
וַיִּקַּח עֵשָׂו אֶת נָשָׁיו וְאֶת בָּנָיו וְאֶת בְּנֹתָיו וְאֶת כָּל נַפְשׁוֹת בֵּיתוֹ וְאֶת מִקְנֵהוּ וְאֶת כָּל בְּהֶמְתּוֹ וְאֵת 36:6
כָּל קִנְיָנוֹ אֲשֶׁר רָכַשׁ בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל אֶרֶץ מִפְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב אָחִיו
Gene. 36:6 And Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all the souls of his house, and his cattle and all his beasts and all his possessions that he had gathered in the land of Canaan, and went to a land away from Jacob, his brother.
כִּי הָיָה רְכוּשָׁם רָב מִשֶּׁבֶת יַחְדָּו וְלֹא יָכְלָה אֶרֶץ מְגוּרֵיהֶם לָשֵׂאת אֹתָם מִפְּנֵי מִקְנֵיהֶם 36:7
Gene. 36:7 For their substance was too great for them to dwell together, and the land of their sojourning could not bear them because of their cattle.
וַיֵּשֶׁב עֵשָׂו בְּהַר שֵׂעִיר עֵשָׂו הוּא אֱדוֹם 36:8
Gene. 36:8 And Esau dwelled on Mount Seir. Esau -- he is Edom. [Return to Ezek. 35:2]
וְאֵלֶּה תֹּלְדוֹת עֵשָׂו אֲבִי אֱדוֹם בְּהַר שֵׂעִיר 36:9
Gene. 36:9 And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites, on Mount Seir.
Earlier we learned of Esau’s sons who were born in Canaan. Now we will learn of those born to his sons on Mount Seir in Edom.
אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי עֵשָׂו אֱלִיפַז בֶּן עָדָה אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו רְעוּאֵל בֶּן בָּשְׂמַת אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו 36:10
Gene. 36:10 These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau, Reuel, the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
וַיִּהְיוּ, בְּנֵי אֱלִיפָז תֵּימָן אוֹמָר צְפוֹ וְגַעְתָּם וּקְנַז 36:11
Gene. 36:11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho and Gatam, and Kenaz.
וְתִמְנַע הָיְתָה פִילֶגֶשׁ לֶאֱלִיפַז בֶּן עֵשָׂו וַתֵּלֶד לֶאֱלִיפַז אֶת עֲמָלֵק אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי עָדָה אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו 36:12
Gene. 36:12 And Timna was a concubine to Eliphaz, Esau's son, and she bore Amalek for Eliphaz. These are the sons of Adah, the wife of Esau.
וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי רְעוּאֵל נַחַת וָזֶרַח שַׁמָּה וּמִזָּה אֵלֶּה הָיוּ בְּנֵי בָשְׂמַת אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו 36:13
Gene. 36:13 And these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
וְאֵלֶּה הָיוּ בְּנֵי אָהֳלִיבָמָה בַת עֲנָה בַּת צִבְעוֹן אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו וַתֵּלֶד לְעֵשָׂו אֶת יעיש וְאֶת 36:14
יַעְלָם וְאֶת קֹרַח
Gene. 36:14 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, the wife of Esau, and she bore Jeush and Jalam and Korah for Esau.

אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי בְנֵי עֵשָׂו בְּנֵי אֱלִיפַז בְּכוֹר עֵשָׂו אַלּוּף תֵּימָן אַלּוּף אוֹמָר אַלּוּף צְפוֹ אַלּוּף קְנַז 36:15
Gene. 36:15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: Of the sons of Eliphaz, first-born of Esau: Chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz,
אַלּוּף קֹרַח אַלּוּף גַּעְתָּם אַלּוּף עֲמָלֵק אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי אֱלִיפַז בְּאֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי עָדָה 36:16
Gene. 36:16 chief Korah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Adah.
וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי רְעוּאֵל בֶּן עֵשָׂו אַלּוּף נַחַת אַלּוּף זֶרַח אַלּוּף שַׁמָּה אַלּוּף מִזָּה אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי רְעוּאֵל 36:17
בְּאֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי בָשְׂמַת אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו
Gene. 36:17 And these are the sons of Reuel the son of Esau: Chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי אָהֳלִיבָמָה אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂואַלּוּף יְעוּשׁ אַלּוּף יַעְלָם אַלּוּף קֹרַח אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי אָהֳלִיבָמָה 36:18
בַּת עֲנָה אֵשֶׁת עֵשָׂו
Gene. 36:18 And these are the sons of Aholibamah, the wife of Esau: Chief Jeush, cheif Jalam, chief Korah. These are the chiefs of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the wife of Esau.
אֵלֶּה בְנֵי עֵשָׂו וְאֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵיהֶם הוּא אֱדוֹם 36:19
Gene. 36:19 These are the sons of Esau and these are their chiefs; it is Edom.
אֵלֶּה בְנֵי שֵׂעִיר הַחֹרִי יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ לוֹטָן וְשׁוֹבָל וְצִבְעוֹן וַעֲנָה 36:20
Gene. 36:20 These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan and Shobal and Zibeon and Anah
וְדִשׁוֹן וְאֵצֶר וְדִישָׁן אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי הַחֹרִי בְּנֵי שֵׂעִיר בְּאֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם 36:21
Gene. 36:21 and Dishon and Ezer and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horite, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.
וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי לוֹטָן חֹרִי וְהֵימָם וַאֲחוֹת לוֹטָן תִּמְנָע 36:22
Gene. 36:22 And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hamam, and the sister of Lotan was Timna.
וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי שׁוֹבָל עַלְוָן וּמָנַחַת וְעֵיבָל שְׁפוֹ וְאוֹנָם 36:23
Gene. 36:23 And these are the children of Shobal: Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, Shepho and Onam.
וְאֵלֶּה בְנֵי צִבְעוֹן וְאַיָּה וַעֲנָה הוּא עֲנָה אֲשֶׁר מָצָא אֶת הַיֵּמִם בַּמִּדְבָּר בִּרְעֹתוֹ אֶת הַחֲמֹרִים 36:24
לְצִבְעוֹן אָבִיו
Gene. 36:24 And these are the sons of Zibeon: And Aiah and Anah; he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness during his tending the asses for Zibeon, his father.
וְאֵלֶּה בְנֵי עֲנָה דִּשֹׁן וְאָהֳלִיבָמָה בַּת עֲנָה 36:25
Gene. 36:25 And these are the children of Anah: Dishon, and Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah.
וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי דִישָׁן חֶמְדָּן וְאֶשְׁבָּן וְיִתְרָן וּכְרָן 36:26
Gene. 36:26 And these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran.
אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי אֵצֶר בִּלְהָן וְזַעֲוָן וַעֲקָן 36:27
Gene. 36:27 These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and Akan.
אֵלֶּה בְנֵי דִישָׁן עוּץ וַאֲרָן 36:28
Gene. 36:28 These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.
אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי הַחֹרִי אַלּוּף לוֹטָן אַלּוּף שׁוֹבָל אַלּוּף צִבְעוֹן אַלּוּף עֲנָה 36:29
Gene. 36:29 These are the chiefs of the Horite: Chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah,
אַלּוּף דִּשֹׁן אַלּוּף אֵצֶר אַלּוּף דִּישָׁן אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי הַחֹרִי לְאַלֻּפֵיהֶם בְּאֶרֶץ שֵׂעִיר 36:30
Gene. 36:30 chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horite according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.
וְאֵלֶּה הַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר מָלְכוּ בְּאֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם לִפְנֵי מְלָךְ מֶלֶךְ לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל 36:31
Gene. 36:31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned for the children of Israel:
This verse gives us very strong evidence that there had already been kings in Israel when this chapter, and perhaps the entire book of Genesis, was written. The precise period when it was written is pretty uncertain, though. It could have been any time after Saul.
וַיִּמְלֹךְ בֶּאֱדוֹם בֶּלַע בֶּן בְּעוֹר וְשֵׁם עִירוֹ דִּנְהָבָה 36:32
Gene. 36:32 And Bela, the son of Beor, reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
וַיָּמָת בָּלַע וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו יֹובָב בֶּן־זֶרַח מִבָּצְרָה 36:33
Gene. 36:33 And Bela died, and Jobab, the son of Zarah, from Bozrah, became king in his stead.
וַיָּמָת יֹובָב וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו חֻשָׁם מֵאֶרֶץ הַתֵּימָנִי 36:34
Gene. 36:34 And Jobab died, and Husham, from the land of the Temanites, became king in his stead.
וַיָּמָת חֻשָׁם וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו הֲדַד בֶּן־בְּדַד הַמַּכֶּה אֶת־מִדְיָן בִּשְׂדֵה מֹואָב וְשֵׁם עִירֹו עֲוִית 36:35
Gene. 36:35 And Husham died, and Hadad, the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, became king in his stead, and the name of his city was Avith.
וַיָּמָת הֲדָד וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו שַׂמְלָה מִמַּשְׂרֵקָה 36:36
Gene. 36:36 And Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah became king in his stead.
וַיָּמָת שַׂמְלָה וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו שָׁאוּל מֵרְחֹבֹות הַנָּהָר 36:37
Gene. 36:37 And Samlah died, and Shaul from Rehoboth of the river became king in his stead.
וַיָּמָת שָׁאוּל וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו בַּעַל חָןָן בֶּן־עַכְבֹּור 36:38
Gene. 36:38 And Shaul died, and Baal-hanan, the son of Achbor, became king in his stead.
וַיָּמָת בַּעַל חָןָן בֶּן־עַכְבֹּור וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו הֲדַר וְשֵׁם עִירֹו פָּעוּ וְשֵׁם אִשְׁתֹּו מְהֵיטַבְאֵל בַּת־מַטְרֵד 36:39
בַּת מֵי זָהָב
Gene. 36:39 And Baal-hanan, the son of Achbor, died and Hadar became king in his stead, and the name of his city was Pau, and the name of his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.
וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמֹות אַלּוּפֵי עֵשָׂו לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִמְקֹמֹתָם בִּשְׁמֹתָם אַלּוּף תִּמְנָע אַלּוּף עַלְוָה אַלּוּף יְתֵת 36:40
Gene. 36:40 And these are the names of the chiefs of Esau according to their families after their places by their names: Chief Alvah, chief Jetteth,
אַלּוּף אָהֳלִיבָמָה אַלּוּף אֵלָה, אַלּוּף פִּינֹן 36:41
Gene. 36:41 chief Aholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon,
אַלּוּף קְנַז אַלּוּף תֵּימָן אַלּוּף מִבְצָר 36:42
Gene. 36:42 chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar,
אַלּוּף מַגְדִּיאֵל אַלּוּף עִירָם אֵלֶּה אַלּוּפֵי אֱדֹום לְמֹשְׁבֹתָם בְּאֶרֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָם הוּא עֵשָׂו אֲבִי אֱדֹום 36:43
Gene. 36:43 chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom according to their habitations in the land of their possession. This was of Esau, father of the Edomites.
You must understand that this chapter is tangential to what has come before and what is to transpire following it. It extends over many generations and is out of sequence with either the previous chapter or the next one.
