[Go Bottom]

Exod. 29:1  “And this is the thing that you shall do to them to hallow them to be a priest for Me: Take one bull calf and two rams without blemishes,

Exod. 29:2  and unleavened bread, and unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers rubbed with oil.  You shall make them of fine wheat flour.”                [Return to Exod. 23:18]

Exod. 29:3  “And you shall put them together on one basket and bring them on the basket, and the bullock and the two rams.”

Exod. 29:4  “And you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and you shall wash them with water.”

It’s intriguing as to where Moses was to get the water.  The Lord would prescribe a laver (wash basin) in the courtyard later, but that doesn’t happen until Chapter 30.  I presume that the water would have to have been sanctified somehow before being used to wash Aaron and his sons.  This might have been common knowledge at the time or completely understood by Moses, so the scribe might have omitted these details.

Exod. 29:5  “And you shall take the garments and clothe Aaron with the tunic and the robe of the ephod and the ephod and the breastplate, and gird him with the woven band of the ephod.”

Exod. 29:6  “And you shall place the miter on his head and put the holy crown over the miter.”

I am quite certain that the holy crown mentioned here is the inscribed gold plate that the Lord described in Exod. 28:36.

Exod. 29:7  “And you shall take the oil of anointing and pour upon his head and anoint him.”

Exod. 29:8  “You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them.”

Exod. 29:9  “And you shall put a sash on them and wrap bonnets for them, that the priesthood shall be theirs, Aaron and his sons, as an eternal statute; so you shall empower Aaron and his descendants.”

Nowhere are we told that the tunics of Aaron’s sons have bells and pomegranates on their hems.  Therefore, I believe they would not be permitted to enter the Tabernacle, except to take it down and put it back up.  Their normal work would be in the courtyard and beyond.  Thus this restriction would apply to all future priests other that the high priest.  In this verse I again translated, for the third time, the last word, בָּנָיו, as his descendants.  Notice that the first time the word appears in the verse (fifth word), I translated it in the traditional way.       [Return to Exod. 30:19]

Exod. 29:10   “And you shall bring the bullock before the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bullock.”

Exod. 29:11   “And you shall slaughter the bullock before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.”

Exod. 29:12   “And you shall take some of the blood of the bullock and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger and you shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar.”

Exod. 29:13   “And you shall take all the fat covering the inside and the protrusion over the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and make smoke on the altar.”

The word for altar is masculine, but the word appearing here is feminine in form, because of the final letter heh.  Wherever it appears spelled this way in the bible, I suspect it has a colloquial meaning, on the altar, because the word “on” is not present in the Hebrew.  Except for two instances in 2Chronicles, the word in feminine form appears numerous times, but only in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.

Exod. 29:14   “But you shall burn the flesh of the bullock and its skin and its dung in a fire outside of the camp.  It will be a sin offering.”

Although the sages seem to be certain about what constituted the sin offering, I profess doubts about their assurance.  It’s hard for me to believe a sin offering was offered outside the court of the tent of meeting.  I would expect that the pronoun it in the last part of the verse refers back to the bullock mentioned in vss. 29:11 and 12, not to the flesh, skin, and dung of this verse.

Exod. 29:15   “And you shall take the first ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands upon the head of the ram.”

Exod. 29:17   “And you shall cut up the ram to its parts and wash its innards and its legs, and put with its pieces and with its head.”

Exod. 29:18   “And you shall make the whole ram smoke on the altar; it is a burnt offering to the Lord; it is the sweet scent of a fire offering to the Lord.”

Exod. 29:19   “And you shall take the second ram, and Aaron, with his sons, shall lay their hands on the head of the ram.”

Exod. 29:20   “And you shall slaughter the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the ear of Aaron and on the tip of the ear of his sons on the right, and on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot; then you shall dash the blood against the altar all around.”

Exod. 29:21   “And you shall take some of the blood that is beside the altar and some of the oil of anointing and sprinkle it over Aaron and on his garments and over his sons and on the garments of his sons with him, so he and his garments will be hallowed, and his sons and the garments of his sons with him.”

Exod. 29:27   “And you shall sanctify the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering that is waved and that is heaved up from the ram of consecration from which will be Aaron’s and from which will be his sons’.”

Exod. 29:30   “The priest in his stead from his sons, who will come in to the tent of meeting to minister in the holy place, shall put them on seven days.”

The phrase “The priest in his stead from his sons” is an allusion to all subsequent High Priests.

Exod. 29:31   “And you shall take the ram of consecration and cook its flesh in a holy place.”

The holy place of this verse must have been designated to Moses, but we are not to learn this information.  I must assume that it was located in the courtyard.

Exod. 29:33   “And they shall eat them as soon as atonement is made with them to empower them to sanctify them.  But no other shall eat, for they are holy.”

Exod. 29:34   “And if some of the flesh of the consecration should remain, and some of the bread, until the morning, then you shall burn the remainder in fire.  It shall not be eaten, for it is holy.”

Exod. 29:35   “And it shall be done to Aaron and to his sons thus according to all that I have commanded you.  Seven days you shall empower them.”

Very interesting!  The sanctification is to continue for seven straight days.  That includes the intervening, beginning or ending Sabbath (depending on which day of the week the process was started).  Such holy activities were not suspended on the Sabbath.  That is rather significant.  I will have some remarks about this later.

Exod. 29:36   “And you shall sacrifice the bullock of the sin offering every day with the atonement offerings and you shall purify on the altar upon your making atonement with it.  You shall anoint it to sanctify it.”
