2Chr. 31:1   And at the completion of all this all of Israel who were present to the cities of Judah went out and smashed the pillars and cut down the Asherim and threw over the high places and the alters from all Judah and Benjamin and throughout Ephraim and Manasseh until it was finished; then all the children of Israel returned, each into his land, to their cities.

2Chr. 31:2   And Hezekiah set up the courses of the priests and the Levites by their divisions, each according to the orders of his service for the priests and for the Levites, for the burnt offering and for peace offerings, to minister and to give thanks and to sing praise at the gates of the places of encampment of the Lord,

2Chr. 31:3   as well as the portion of the king from his property for burnt offerings, for the burnt offerings of the morning and of the evening, and the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and for the new moons and for the appointed times, as written in the Torah of the Lord.

2Chr. 31:4   He also said to the people, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to give the portion of the priests and the Levites so that they could be zealous in the Torah of the Lord.

2Chr. 31:5   And when the word was distributed the children of Israel increased the first of the corn, the new wine, and the fresh oil and honey, and of all the yield of the field, and they brought the tithe of everything in abundance.

2Chr. 31:6   And the children of Israel and of Judah who were dwelling in the cities of Judah, they also brought the tithe of cattle and sheep, and the tithe of holy things that were to be consecrated to the Lord, their God, and they set heaps of heaps.

2Chr. 31:7   In the third month they began to place the heaps and in the seventh month they finished.

2Chr. 31:8   When Hezekiah and the princes came and they saw the heaps, then they blessed the Lord and His people, Israel.

2Chr. 31:9   When Hezekiah inquired with the priests and the Levites about the heaps,

2Chr. 31:10   then Azariah, the head priest, belonging to the house of Zadok, answered and said to him, “Since the offering began to be brought to the house of the Lord, [we have been] eating and being filled, yet the remainder is up to abundance.  For the Lord has so blessed His people that what remains, this amount is great.”

The Hebrew for the words in the brackets is missing.  It actually may not be required.  The verse makes sense without it, but the English is somewhat awkward.

2Chr. 31:11   Then Hezekiah said to prepare the chambers in the house of the Lord, and they prepared.

2Chr. 31:12   Then they brought the offering and the tithe and the holy things in a steady stream.  And Conaniah, the Levite, was the ruler over them, and Shimei, his brother, was second.

Conaniah’s name is allegedly misspelled in the parentheses.  The name also appears in 1Chr. 26:29 as Cheneniah, but this is not the same person.  So how did the sages decide this name was incorrectly spelled?  I don’t have any information about it.  Whether this is indeed an error or not, I’ve shown the alleged correction in the brackets.  But see also my remarks about 2Chr. 35:9.

2Chr. 31:13   And Jehiel and Azaziah and Nachath and Asahel and Jerimoth and Jozabad and Eliel and Ismachiah and Machath and Beniah were overseers from the hand of Conaniah and Shimei, his brother, by appointment of Hezekiah, the king, and Azariah, the leader of the house of God.

See my remarks on the preceding verse for the name Conaniah to the right of the left parenthesis.

2Chr. 31:14   And Kora son of Imnah, the Levite, the keeper of the gate to the east, was over the free-will offerings of God, delivering the offering of the Lord and the holiest of the holy things.

2Chr. 31:15   And next to him were Eden and Miniamin and Jeshua and Shemaiah.  Amariah and Shecaniah were in the cities of the priests, with fidelity to deliver to their brethren according to course, great as well as small,

2Chr. 31:16   besides those reckoned by their genealogy, to the males from age three years and upwards, to everyone who came to the house of the Lord in his daily manner, for their service because of their charge according to their courses,

2Chr. 31:17   and with those reckoned by genealogy of the priests for the house of their fathers, and the Levites from age twenty years and upward, because of their charges according to their courses,

2Chr. 31:18   and to those reckoned by genealogy, with all their little ones, their wives, and their sons and their daughters, for the whole congregation (for with their fidelity they would prepare the sanctuary),

2Chr. 31:19   and to the sons of Aaron, the priests, in the fields of the open land of their cities, in every city and town, men who were appointed by name to deliver portions to every male among the priests and to all reckoned by genealogy among the Levites.

2Chr. 31:20   And Hezekiah did the same throughout all Judah as what he did was good and right and faithful before the Lord, his God.

2Chr. 31:21   And in every undertaking that he began in the service of the house of God, or inquiring to his God in the law and in precept, with all his heart he did, and he prospered.
