לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַל־הַגִּתִּית מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד׃ 8:1
Psal. 8:1 For the musician on the gittith, a psalm of David's.
The meaning of the term gittith is not well understood. Some believe it is a harp-like instrument.

יְהוָה אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה־אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תְּנָה הוֹדְךָ עַל־הַשָּׁמָיִם׃ 8:2
Psal. 8:2 O Lord, our Master! How glorious is Your name in all the earth,
as You set Your majesty over the heavens!
מִפִּי עוֹלְלִים וְיֹנְקִים יִסַּדְתָּ עֹז לְמַעַן צוֹרְרֶיךָ לְהַשְׁבִּית אוֹיֵב וּמִתְנַקֵּם׃ 8:3
Psal. 8:3 Since the sounds of children and sucklings
You have established strength because of Your adversaries
to insure failure of the enemy and the avenger.
כִּי־אֶרְאֶה שָׁמֶיךָ מַעֲשֵׂי אֶצְבְּעֹתֶיךָ יָרֵחַ וְכוֹכָבִים אֲשֶׁר כּוֹנָנְתָּה׃ 8:4
Psal. 8:4 Whenever I regard Your heavens, the work of Your “fingers,”
the moon and the stars that You have rendered,
מָה־אֱנוֹשׁ כִּי־תִזְכְּרֶנּוּ וּבֶן־אָדָם כִּי תִפְקְדֶנּוּ׃ 8:5
Psal. 8:5 what is humankind that You should remember us?
And a son of a human that You should care for us,
וַתְּחַסְּרֵהוּ מְּעַט מֵאֱלֹהִים וְכָבוֹד וְהָדָר תְּעַטְּרֵהוּ׃ 8:6
Psal. 8:6 that You would make him slightly lower than the angels,
and of glory and honor You would crown him?
David reminds us how small we are compared to the immensity and grandeur of the heavens. Yet God is mindful of us. Something we have probably pondered since our ancient ancestors became aware of their individuality.
תַּמְשִׁילֵהוּ בְּמַעֲשֵׂי יָדֶיךָ כֹּל שַׁתָּה תַחַת־רַגְלָיו׃ 8:7
Psal. 8:7 You would have him reign among the works of Your hands;
You have put everything beneath his feet:
צֹנֶה וַאֲלָפִים כֻּלָּם וְגַם בַּהֲמוֹת שָׂדָי׃ 8:8
Psal. 8:8 Sheep and oxen, all of them,
and also the beasts of the field,
צִפּוֹר שָׁמַיִם וּדְגֵי הַיָּם עֹבֵר אָרְחוֹת יַמִּים׃ 8:9
Psal. 8:9 the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea,
beyond the lanes of the sea.
יְהוָה אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה־אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל־הָאָרֶץ׃ 8:10
Psal. 8:10 Lord, our Master, How glorious is Your name in all the earth!
