Psalms 115

 

This psalm seems to continue the theme of the previous five psalms, beginning with Psalm 110, all in praise of the Lord and His works.

לֹא לָנוּ יְהוָה לֹא לָנוּ כִּי־לְשִׁמְךָ תֵּן כָּבֹוד עַל־חַסְדְּךָ עַל־אֲמִתֶּךָ׃   115:1

Psal. 115:1   Give glory, not to us, Lord, not to us, but to Your name,

                                because of Your mercy, because of Your faithfulness.

לָמָּה יֹאמְרוּ הַגֹּויִם אַיֵּה־נָא אֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃   115:2

Psal. 115:2   Why would the nations say,

                                 “Now where is their God?”

וֵאלֹהֵינוּ בַשָּׁמָיִם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־חָפֵץ עָשָׂה׃   115:3

Psal. 115:3   Now is our God in heaven;

                                 anything that He “delights” in, He does.

עֲצַבֵּיהֶם כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי אָדָם׃   115:4

Psal. 115:4   Their idols are of silver and gold,

                                 the work of the hands of humankind.

פֶּה־לָהֶם וְלֹא יְדַבֵּרוּ עֵינַיִם לָהֶם וְלֹא יִרְאוּ׃   115:5

Psal. 115:5   A mouth is theirs, but they cannot speak;

                                 eyes are theirs, but they cannot see.

אָזְנַיִם לָהֶם וְלֹא יִשְׁמָעוּ אַף לָהֶם וְלֹא יְרִיחוּן׃   115:6

Psal. 115:6   Ears are theirs, but they cannot hear;

                                  a nose is theirs, but they cannot smell.

יְדֵיהֶם וְלֹא יְמִישׁוּן רַגְלֵיהֶם וְלֹא יְהַלֵּכוּ לֹא־יֶהְגּוּ בִּגְרֹונָם׃   115:7

Psal. 115:7   Their hands? Yet they cannot feel.

                                 Their feet? But they cannot walk.

                        They cannot speak with their throat.

כְּמֹוהֶם יִהְיוּ עֹשֵׂיהֶם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־בֹּטֵחַ בָּהֶם׃   115:8

Psal. 115:8   Their makers shall become like them,

                                 everyone who trusts in them.

יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּטַח בַּיהוָה עֶזְרָם וּמָגִנָּם הוּא׃   115:9

Psal. 115:9   Israel trusts in the Lord;

                                 He is their Helper and their Shield.

בֵּית אַהֲרֹן בִּטְחוּ בַיהוָה עֶזְרָם וּמָגִנָּם הוּא׃   115:10

Psal. 115:10   Of the house of Aaron, they trust in the Lord;

                                 He is their Helper and their Shield.

יִרְאֵי יְהוָה בִּטְחוּ בַיהוָה עֶזְרָם וּמָגִנָּם הוּא׃   115:11

Psal. 115:11   Reverers of the Lord trust in the Lord;

                                 He is their Helper and their Shield.

יְהוָה זְכָרָנוּ יְבָרֵךְ יְבָרֵךְ אֶת־בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל יְבָרֵךְ אֶת־בֵּית אַהֲרֹן׃   115:12

Psal. 115:12   The Lord remembers us -- He will bless.

                                  He will bless the house of Israel,

                           He will bless the house of Aaron.

יְבָרֵךְ יִרְאֵי יְהוָה הַקְּטַנִּים עִם־הַגְּדֹלִים׃   115:13

Psal. 115:13   He will bless those reverent of the Lord,

                                   those small with those great.

יֹסֵף יְהוָה עֲלֵיכֶם עֲלֵיכֶם וְעַל־בְּנֵיכֶם׃   115:14

Psal. 115:14   The Lord will add on to you,

                                    to you and to your children.

בְּרוּכִים אַתֶּם לַיהוָה עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ׃   115:15

Psal. 115:15   May you be blessed by the Lord,

                                    the Maker of heaven and earth.

הַשָּׁמַיִם שָׁמַיִם לַיהוָה וְהָאָרֶץ נָתַן לִבְנֵי־אָדָם׃   115:16

Psal. 115:16   The heavens are the Lord's heavens,

                                    but He has given the earth to the children of Adam.

לֹא הַמֵּתִים יְהַלְלוּ־יָהּ וְלֹא כָּל־יֹרְדֵי דוּמָה׃   115:17

Psal. 115:17   The dead cannot praise the Lord,

                                    nor any of the descenders of silence.

וַאֲנַחְנוּ נְבָרֵךְ יָהּ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד־עֹולָם הַלְלוּ־יָהּ׃   115:18

Psal. 115:18   So let us bless the Lord,

                                    from now and until the end of time.
