Numb. 3:1 Now these were the generations of Aaron and Moses on the day the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai:
This verse seems to introduce this entire chapter, but it launches only the next three verses. The rest of the chapter is concerned with the generations of Levi son of Jacob. In addition, the generations of Moses are not included. As a matter of fact, no one knows anything about the generations of Moses.
Numb. 3:2 And these were the names of the children of Aaron: The first born, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
Numb. 3:3 These were the names of the children of Aaron, the priests, the anointed, who were consecrated to priesthood.
Numb. 3:4 Now Nadab and Abihu had died before the Lord when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai, and there were no children for them, so Eleazar and Ithamar were priests in the presence of Aaron, their father.
Numb. Numb. 3:5 And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,
Numb. 3:6 “Bring the tribe of Levi and set it before Aaron, the priest, so they may serve him.”
We can pretty well place the time of this event. It had to be one of three possibilities: (1) before work started on the tent of meeting, (2) as soon as the tent of meeting was completed, or (3) very soon after Moses consecrated the Tabernacle and the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons. Because the Levites were responsible for taking down, carrying, and re-erecting the tent of meeting and the Tabernacle, this command had to have been given before the first time the children of Israel moved out on the initial leg of their wilderness trek from Mount Sinai.
Numb. 3:7 “And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the entire congregation before the tent of meeting to do the service of the Tabernacle.”
Numb. 3:8 “And they shall keep every article of the tent of meeting and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the Tabernacle.”
Numb. 3:9 “And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are entirely delivered to him from the children of Israel.”
Numb. 3:10 “And you shall warn Aaron and his sons that they shall protect their priesthood; that the stranger coming near would have to die.”
Numb. 3:11 And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,
Numb. 3:12 “Now behold, I have taken the Levites from the midst of the children of Israel instead of every first born opening the womb from the children of Israel, so the Levites would be Mine.
Numb. 3:13 “For all the first born are Mine: On the day that I smote every first born in the land of Egypt I consecrated every first born in Israel to Me, both human and beast. They shall be Mine.”
“I am the Lord.”
Numb. 3:14 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying,
Numb. 3:15 “Count the sons of Levi belonging to the house of their fathers according to their families. Every male from age one month and up, shall you count them.”
A question arises as to why the counting should begin with one-month olds. Why not new born as well? I doubt that anyone has a definitive answer, but this is probably the source of the ceremony of pidyon haben, the ceremony of redemption of the first born male, which takes place when a first born male is at least 31 days old.
Numb. 3:16 And Moses counted them according to the Lord as He had commanded.
With this verse the scribe shifts from the Lord commanding Moses since v. 3:6 to a historical narrative. Because the Hebrew text of the verses of this chapter up to v. 3:40 contain almost no verbs (to be verbs have to be implied), it becomes difficult to determine if the Lord resumes commanding Moses or the verses from here to v. 3:40 continue the historical narrative. The translation from this point to that one assumes that the intervening verses are historical narrative.
Numb. 3:17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.
Numb. 3:18 And these were the names of the sons of Gershon according to their families: Libni and Shimei.
