Judges 12

 

וַיִּצָּעֵק אִישׁ אֶפְרַיִם וַיַּעֲבֹר צָפוֹנָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לְיִפְתָּח מַדּוּעַ עָבַרְתָּ לְהִלָּחֵם בִּבְנֵי־עַמּוֹן וְלָנוּ לֹא   12:1

קָרָאתָ לָלֶכֶת עִמָּךְ בֵּיתְךָ נִשְׂרֹף עָלֶיךָ בָּאֵשׁ׃

Judg. 12:1   And each man of Ephraim was gathered and crossed to Zaphon, and they said to Jephthach, “Why did you pass over to fight with the children of Ammon and you did not call to us to go with you?  We will burn your house upon you with fire.”

וַיֹּאמֶר יִפְתָּח אֲלֵיהֶם אִישׁ רִיב הָיִיתִי אֲנִי וְעַמִּי וּבְנֵי־עַמּוֹן מְאֹד וָאֶזְעַק אֶתְכֶם וְלֹא־הוֹשַׁעְתֶּם אוֹתִי   12:2

מִיָּדָם׃

Judg. 12:2   And Jephthach said to them, “A man of strife was I -- I and my people -- and the children of Ammon were mighty, and I called you, but you did not deliver me from their hand.”

וָאֶרְאֶה כִּי־אֵינְךָ מוֹשִׁיעַ וָאָשִׂימָה נַפְשִׁי בְכַפִּי וָאֶעְבְּרָה אֶל־בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וַיִּתְּנֵם יְהוָה בְּיָדִי וְלָמָה   12:3

עֲלִיתֶם אֵלַי הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה לְהִלָּחֶם בִּי׃

Judg. 12:3   And I saw that you were not a savior, so I took my life in my hand and I went forth to the children of Ammon.  And the Lord delivered them into my hand.  So why have you come up to me this day to fight with me?”

וַיִּקְבֹּץ יִפְתָּח אֶת־כָּל־אַנְשֵׁי גִלְעָד וַיִּלָּחֶם אֶת־אֶפְרָיִם וַיַּכּוּ אַנְשֵׁי גִלְעָד אֶת־אֶפְרַיִם כִּי אָמְרוּ   12:4

פְּלִיטֵי אֶפְרַיִם אַתֶּם גִּלְעָד בְּתוֹךְ אֶפְרַיִם בְּתוֹךְ מְנַשֶּׁה׃

Judg. 12:4   And Jephthach brought together all the men of Gilead and he fought Ephraim, and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, in the midst of Manasseh.”

וַיִּלְכֹּד גִּלְעָד אֶת־מַעְבְּרוֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן לְאֶפְרָיִם וְהָיָה כִּי יֹאמְרוּ פְּלִיטֵי אֶפְרַיִם אֶעֱבֹרָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ   12:5

אַנְשֵׁי־גִלְעָד הַאֶפְרָתִי אַתָּה וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא׃

Judg. 12:5   And Gilead took the crossings of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it would be when the fugitives of Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over.” then the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephrathite?” and he said, “No.”

וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ אֱמָר־נָא שִׁבֹּלֶת וַיֹּאמֶר סִבֹּלֶת וְלֹא יָכִין לְדַבֵּר כֵּן וַיֹּאחֲזוּ אוֹתוֹ וַיִּשְׁחָטוּהוּ אֶל־   12:6

מַעְבְּרוֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן וַיִּפֹּל בָּעֵת הַהִיא מֵאֶפְרַיִם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁנַיִם אָלֶף׃

Judg. 12:6   then they said to him, “Say now, ‘Shibboleth.’” and he would try to say, “Sibboleth,” and he could not establish to pronounce so, then they seized him and slaughtered him at the crossings of the Jordan.  And forty-two thousand from Ephraim fell at that time.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט יִפְתָּח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל שֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים וַיָּמָת יִפְתָּח הַגִּלְעָדִי וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּעָרֵי גִלְעָד׃   12:7

Judg. 12:7   And Jephthach judged Israel six years.  Then Jephthach, the Gileadite, died and was buried near the cities of Gilead.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אַחֲרָיו אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל אִבְצָן מִבֵּית לָחֶם׃   12:8

Judg. 12:8   Then after him Ibzan from Beth-lehem judged Israel.

וַיְהִי־לוֹ שְׁלֹשִׁים בָּנִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים בָּנוֹת שִׁלַּח הַחוּצָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים בָּנוֹת הֵבִיא לְבָנָיו מִן־הַחוּץ וַיִּשְׁפֹּט   12:9

אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים׃

Judg. 12:9   And he had thirty sons; and he sent thirty daughters away abroad; and he brought in thirty daughters for his sons from abroad.  And he judged Israel seven years.

וַיָּמָת אִבְצָן וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּבֵית לָחֶם׃   12:10

Judg. 12:10   Then Ibzan died and was buried in Beth-lehem.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אַחֲרָיו אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵילוֹן הַזְּבוּלֹנִי וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים׃   12:11

Judg. 12:11   Then after him Elon, the Zebulunite, judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.

וַיָּמָת אֵלוֹן הַזְּבוּלֹנִי וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּאַיָּלוֹן בְּאֶרֶץ זְבוּלֻן׃   12:12

Judg. 12:12   And Elon, the Zebulunite, died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אַחֲרָיו אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַבְדּוֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִי׃   12:13

Judg. 12:13   Then after him Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judged Israel.

וַיְהִי־לוֹ אַרְבָּעִים בָּנִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים בְּנֵי בָנִים רֹכְבִים עַל־שִׁבְעִים עֲיָרִם וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁמֹנֶה   12:14

שָׁנִים׃

Judg. 12:14   And he had forty sons and thirty sons of sons riding on seventy ass colts.  And he judged Israel eight years.

וַיָּמָת עַבְדּוֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִי וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּפִרְעָתוֹן בְּאֶרֶץ אֶפְרַיִם בְּהַר הָעֲמָלֵקִי׃   12:15

Judg. 12:15   And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim in the hill country of the Amalekites.
