Jere. 28:1   And it was in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the sight of the priests and of all the people saying,

The word in parentheses, translated as year, is in error, and is corrected in the brackets.

[Return to Jere. 32:1]                   [Return to Jere. 45:1]

Jere. 28:2   “Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, God of Israel, saying, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.’

Jere. 28:3   ‘By the end of two years time I am bringing back to this place all the vessels of the house of the Lord that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took from this place and carried them off in Babylon,

Jere. 28:4   and I am bringing back Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah carried off to Babylon, to this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Jere. 28:5   Then Jeremiah, the prophet, spoke to Hananiah, the prophet, in the sight of the priests and in the sight of all the people standing in the house of the Lord,

Jere. 28:6   and Jeremiah, the prophet, said “Amen!  So may the Lord do!  May the Lord fulfill your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of the Lord from Babylon and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.”

Jere. 28:7   “However, hear now this word that I am speaking in your ears and in the ears of all the people:

Jere. 28:8   The prophets who were before me and before you from of old and prophesied concerning many lands and about great kingdoms regarding war and regarding evil and regarding pestilence,

Jere. 28:9   the prophet who would prophesy regarding peace:  By the word of the prophet coming about, the prophet to whom the Lord sent with the truth can be known.”

Jere. 28:10   Then Hananiah, the prophet, took the bar from the neck of Jeremiah, the prophet and broke it.

Jere. 28:11   And Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people saying, “Thus says the Lord:  ‘Like this I shall break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, by the end of two years time from the neck of all the nations.’”  And Jeremiah, the prophet, went on his way.

Jere. 28:12   Now the word of the Lord occurred to Jeremiah after Hananiah, the prophet, had broken the bar from the neck of Jeremiah, the prophet, saying,

Jere. 28:13   “Go, and you shall speak to Hananiah saying, ‘Thus says the Lord:  ‘You have broken bars of wood but you have made bars of iron in their stead.’

Jere. 28:14   ‘For thus says the Lord of hosts, God of Israel: ‘I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations to serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and they shall serve him; and the animals of the field I have given to him as well.’”

Jere. 28:15   Then Jeremiah, the prophet, said to Hananiah, the prophet, “Now hear, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, so you make this people trust in a lie.”

Jere. 28:16   “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I am sending you from the face of the earth; this year you are to die for the apostasy you have spoken concerning the Lord.’”

Jere. 28:17   And Hananiah, the prophet, died in that year in the seventh month.
