Isaiah 60

Isai. 60:1   Arise, shine!  For your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord rises upon you!

All the second-person pronouns in this chapter are feminine singular, thereby signifying that Isaiah is addressing Zion for the entire chapter.

Isai. 60:2   But behold, darkness shall cover the earth,

and a thick cloud the peoples,

when over you the Lord will rise

and His glory will appear upon you.

Isai. 60:3   Then nations will come to your light,

and kings, to the brilliance of your rising.

Isai. 60:4   Lift up your eyes all about and see!

All of them are assembled, they come to you.

Your sons from afar shall come,

and your daughters shall be supported on the side.

Isai. 60:5   Then you will see and be lit up,

and your heart shall tremble and be enlarged.

For the abundance of the sea will be turned over to you,

the mightiest of the nations shall come to you.

Isai. 60:6   The multitude of camels shall overwhelm you.

Of the young camels of Midian and Ephah,

all of them from Sheba shall come.

Gold and frankincense they shall carry,

and they shall announce the praises of the Lord.

In this verse and the next, the five names mentioned, Midian, Ephah, Sheba, Kedar, and Nebaioth, are either descendants of Ishmael or other of Abraham’s sons by Keturia.  They are all thought to be Arab tribes.

Isai. 60:7   All the sheep of Kedar shall be gathered to you;

the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you.

                    “Upon acceptance, they shall ascend My altar;

and I shall glorify My splendid house.”

Isai. 60:8   “Who are these?

Like a cloud they would fly away,

or like doves to their cotes.”

Isai. 60:9   “Surely the isles would wait for Me,

and the ships of Tarshish at the beginning,

to bring your sons from afar,

their silver and their gold with them,”

for the name of the Lord, your God,

and for the glory of Israel,

                     because He glorified you.

Isai. 60:10   And sons of aliens shall build your walls,

and their kings shall serve you.

“While in My ‘wrath’ I smote you,

now with My favor I have compassion on you.”

Isai. 60:11   So your gates shall be open continually.

Day and night they shall not be closed,

bringing the might of nations to you,

                            with their kings leading.

Isai. 60:12   For the nation and the kingdom

that will not serve you shall perish,

and the nations shall be utterly destroyed.

Isai. 60:13   “The splendor of Lebanon shall come to you,

the cypress, the pine tree, and the cedar alike,

to beautify the place of My sanctuary.

And I shall glorify the place of My feet.”

Isai. 60:14   “And the sons of your persecutors

                           shall come to you stooped,

and all your despisers shall bow down

at the soles of your feet,

and they shall call you the city of the Lord,

Zion of the Holy One of Israel.”

Isai. 60:15   “Instead of you being forsaken and hated

                          so no one passes through,

now I will set you for a lasting excellence,

                          a joy generation after generation.”

Isai. 60:16   “And you shall suck the milk of nations,

and you shall suck the breast of kings.

Then you shall understand that I am the Lord,

                           your Savior and your Redeemer,

                      the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Isai. 60:17   “In place of brass I will set gold,

                           and in place of iron I will set silver;

                      and in place of wood, brass;

and in place of stones, iron.

And I will make peace your charge,

                           and righteousness your driver.”

Isai. 60:18   Violence shall be heard of no more in your land,

desolation, or destruction within your borders.

Then you shall call your walls salvation,

                           and your gates praise.

Isai. 60:19   The sun shall not be as a daily light for you any more,

and the moon will not give light to you for brightness,

but the Lord will be to you for a Perpetual Light

and your God for your Glory.

Isai. 60:20   Your sun need not come any more,

                           nor your moon received,

for the Lord shall be to you for an Everlasting Light,

so the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Isai. 60:21   “And your people, all of them righteous,

                           shall possess the earth forever,

                     the shoot of My planting,

the work of My hand, to be glorified.”

The word in the parentheses has a vav suffix instead of a yad.  As spelled, the word would have to be translated as his planting, but it’s obvious that the word should translate to My planting.  The correction is in the brackets

Isai. 60:22   The smallest shall be as a thousand,

and the youngest as a mighty nation.

“I, the Lord, shall hasten it in its time.”
