2Chr. 23:1 And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself enough that he took the captains of hundreds for Azariah son of Jeroham and for Ishmael son of Jehohanan and for Azariah son of Obed, and Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri, into covenant with him.
This chapter recalls the same events that 2Kings Chapter 11 does beginning with 2Kin. 11:4, although the details of the two accounts differ in several respects. In addition, the name of Ahaziah is incorrectly given here as Azariah again (see 2Chr. 22:6).
2Chr. 23:2 And they circled throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of Israel's households, and they came to Jerusalem.
This verse and the next are not mentioned in 2 Kings Chapter 11.
2Chr. 23:3 And the whole assembly made a covenant in the house of God with the king, and he said to them, “Behold, the son of the king shall reign as the Lord spoke regarding the sons of David.”
2Chr. 23:4 “This is the thing that you shall do: This third out of you who are coming this Sabbath belonging to the priesthood and to the Levites shall be for keepers of the doors,
These instructions by Jehoiada in this verse and the next are somewhat different from those in 2Kin. 11:5 and 11:6.
2Chr. 23:5 and that third shall be at the house of the king, and the other third shall be at the foundation gate. And all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord;
2Chr. 23:6 however, none shall enter the house of the Lord but only the priests and those ministering belonging to the Levites. They can enter, for they are holy, and all the people must observe the injunction of the Lord.”
This part of Jehoiada’s instructions is missing from 2Kings Chapter 11.
2Chr. 23:7 “And the Levites shall surround the king on every side, each with his weapons in his hand, and anyone coming into the house shall be slain. And remain with the king on his coming in and his going out.”
2Chr. 23:8 And the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada, the priest, had commanded, and they took, each his men coming in that Sabbath as well as going out that Sabbath, for Jehoiada, the priest, had not released the courses.
2Chr. 23:9 And Jehoiada, the priest, delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears and the bucklers and the shields that had belonged to king David that were of the house of God.
2Chr. 23:10 And he stationed all the people, each with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house up to the left side of the house toward the altar and toward the house by the king on every side.
2Chr. 23:11 And they brought out the son of the king and put the crown and the evidence upon him, and made him king, and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, as they said, “May the king live!”
2Chr. 23:12 And Athaliah heard the sound of the people running and praising the king, and she came to the people at the house of the Lord,
2Chr. 23:13 and she looked and behold, the king was standing atop his pillar at the entrance and the captains and the trumpeters were by the king, and the entire people of the land rejoiced and was blowing on trumpets, and they were singing with instruments of music and declaring in praise. And Athaliah tore her garments and said, “Treason! Treason!”
2Chr. 23:14 Then Jehoiada, the priest, brought out the captains of hundreds, appointees of the host, and said to them, “Let her go out from the house to the ranks, and anyone who goes after her shall be slain by the sword.” For the priest said, “You shall not slay her in the house of the Lord.”
These instructions exhibit some differences from those in 2Kin. 11:15.

2Chr. 23:16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people, and the king, to be as the Lord's people.
2Chr. 23:17 So all the people went to the house of Baal and pulled it down, and shattered its altars and its images, and slew Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars.
2Chr. 23:18 And Jehoiada put the offices of the house of the Lord in the hand of the priests, of the Levites, that David had alloted over the house of the Lord to offer burnt offerings as written in the law of Moses with joy and with song according to the hands of David.
