1Sam. 31:1 Now the Philistines were fighting with Israel and the men of Israel fled from the presence of the Philistines and fell slain on the mount of Gilboa.
1Sam. 31:2 And the Philistines pursued Saul and his sons hard, and the Philistines smote Jonathon and Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
1Sam. 31:3 And the battle went heavy against Saul when the archers found him, men with arrows, and he trembled greatly from the archers.
1Sam. 31:4 Then Saul said to his weapons bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so those uncircumcised cannot come and torture me.” But his weapons bearer was not willing, because he was too respectful. So Saul seized the sword and fell on it.
1Sam. 31:5 When his weapons bearer saw that Saul was dead, then he also fell on his sword and died with him.
1Sam. 31:6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his weapons bearer, as well as all his men together on that day. [Return to 2Sam. 2:10]
1Sam. 31:7 When the men of Israel saw who were on the other side of the valley and who were on the other side of the Jordan, that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they left the cities and fled, and the Philistines came and dwelled in them.
1Sam. 31:8 And it was the next day when the Philistines came to plunder the slain that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on the mount of Gilboa.
1Sam. 31:9 And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor; then they sent into the land of the Philistines everywhere to notify the house of their idols and the people.
1Sam. 31:10 And they put his weapons in the house of the Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body on the wall of Beth-shan.
1Sam. 31:11 When the inhabitants of Jabesh of Gilead heard about it, what the Philistines had done to Saul,
1Sam. 31:12 then all the men of valor arose and went all night, and took the body of Saul and and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.
1Sam. 31:13 Then they took their bones and buried beneath the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
