1Kings 2

1Kin. 2:1   Now the days of David to die approached, so he charged Solomon his son saying,

1Kin. 2:2   “I am going by way of all the earth, so you must be strong and be a man,

1Kin. 2:3   and keep the charge of the Lord, your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, and His ordinances, and His testimonies according to the writing in the Torah of Moses, in order that you may succeed with all that you do and wherever you turn,

1Kin. 2:4   so the Lord may establish His word that He spoke to me saying, ‘If your children will keep their way to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ (saying,) ‘No man of yours shall be cut off from the throne of Israel.’”

There are two words meaning saying in this verse.  It appears that the second one, in parentheses, is superfluous.  The word in this verse that the Lord spoke to David should read “If your children will keep their way to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, no man of yours shall be cut off from the throne of Israel.”  Of course, the prophecy was indeed fulfilled.  David’s offspring did not keep their way to walk before the Lord.  Even Solomon!

1Kin. 2:5   “And also you know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, to Abner son of Ner and to Amasa son of Jether, that he slew them, that he took the blood of war in peace and put the blood of war on his girdle that was on his loins and on his shoes that were on his feet.”

1Kin. 2:6   “So do according to your wisdom and do not let his gray hair go down peacefully to the grave.”

1Kin. 2:7   “And you should show kindness to the sons of Barzillai, the Gileadite, and let them be among the diners of your table, for they drew near in this manner to me when I fled from the presence of Absalom, your brother.”

1Kin. 2:8   “And behold, Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite, from Bachurim is with you, and he cursed me a grievous curse on the day I went to Machanaim.  When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, then I swore to him by the Lord saying, “I will not slay you with the sword.”

1Kin. 2:9   “But now do not hold him innocent, for you are a wise man and you will know what you should do to him and will bring down his gray hair in blood to the grave.”

1Kin. 2:10   And David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.

1Kin. 2:11   And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years.  He reigned in Hebron seven years and he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

1Kin. 2:12   And Solomon sat on the throne of David, his father, and his kingdom was very stable.

1Kin. 2:13   And Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bath-sheba, mother of Solomon, and she said, “Is your coming peaceable?”  And he said, “Peaceable.”

1Kin. 2:14   Then he said, “I have a request to you.”  And she said, “Speak.”

1Kin. 2:15   And he said, “You know that the kingdom was for me, and all Israel had set their faces on me to be king, but the kingdom was turned about and became for my brother, for it was for him from the Lord.”

1Kin. 2:16   “And now I am asking one request from you.  Do not deny me my inquiry.”  And she said to him, “Speak.”

1Kin. 2:17   And he said, “Speak, I pray you, to Solomon, the king, for he will not deny your favor, that he give Abishag, the Shunammitess, to me for a wife.”

1Kin. 2:18   And Bath-sheba said, “I will speak well concerning you to the king.”

1Kin. 2:19   And Bath-sheba went to king Solomon to speak to him concerning Adonijah. And the king arose to greet her and bowed down to her.  Then he sat down on his throne and a seat was placed for the mother of the king, and she sat to his right.

1Kin. 2:20   Then she said, “I ask one small request from you.  Do not deny my inquiry.”  And the king said to her, “Ask, my mother, for I will not deny your inquiry.”

1Kin. 2:21   And she said, “Let Abishag, the Shunammitess, be given to Adonijah, your brother, for a wife.”

1Kin. 2:22   And king Solomon answered and said to his mother, “And why do you request Abishag, the Shunammitess, for Adonijah?  Then ask the kingdom for him, for he is my brother, older than I, even for him, and for Abiathar, the priest, and for Joab son of Zeruiah.”

1Kin. 2:23   And king Solomon swore by the Lord saying, “So may God do to me and still more, that Adonijah has spoken this word with his own life.”

1Kin. 2:24   ׃“So now, as the Lord lives Who established me and seated me on the throne of David, my father, and Who has made a house for me as He promised, surely today Adonijah shall be put to death.”

The word in parentheses has an extra yad in its spelling.  The correction is in the brackets.

1Kin. 2:25   And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah son of Jehoiadah, and he fell on him, so he died.

1Kin. 2:26   And the king said to Abiathar, the priest, “Go to Anathoth, onto your own fields, for you are deserving of death, but on this day I will not put you to death, because you bore the ark of my Lord, the Lord, before David, my father, and because you were afflicted with all that my father was afflicted.”

1Kin. 2:27   So Solomon expelled Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, confirming the word of the Lord that He spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

See 1Sam. 3:12 to 14 regarding this matter.

1Kin. 2:28   And the tidings came as far as Joab.  Because Joab had taken after Adonijah, although he had not taken after Absalom, so Joab fled to the tent of the Lord and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

1Kin. 2:29   And it was told to king Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and behold, was beside the altar.  Then Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada saying, “Go fall on him.”

1Kin. 2:30   So Benaiah went to the tent of the Lord and said to him, “Thus said the king:  ‘Come forth.’”  And he said, “No, for here will I die.”  So Benaiah brought the king back word saying, “Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.”

1Kin. 2:31   And the king said to him, “Do as he said, and fall on him.  Then you shall bury him, so you will remove the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from off me and from off the house of my father.”

1Kin. 2:32   “And the Lord will return his blood upon his own head because he fell upon two men more righteous and finer than he and slew them with the sword while my father did not know, Abner son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.”

1Kin. 2:33   “So their blood shall return on the head of Joab and on the head of his seed forever, but to David and to his seed and to his house and to his throne shall come peace forever from being with the Lord.”

1Kin. 2:34   So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and fell on him and slew him.  Then he was buried by his house in the wilderness.

1Kin. 2:35   Then the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in his stead over the host, and the king appointed Zadok, the priest, in place of Abiathar.

1Kin. 2:36   And the king sent and called for Shimei and said to him, “Build a house for yourself in Jerusalem and live there, and do not go forth from there here or there.”

1Kin. 2:37   “For it will be on the day of your departure and you cross the brook Kidron, you should know for certain that surely you will die.  Your blood shall be on your own head.”

1Kin. 2:38   And Shimei said to the king, “The matter is good.  As my lord, the king, has spoken, so your servant will do.”  And Shimei dwelled in Jerusalem many days.

1Kin. 2:39   Then it happened at the end of three years that two of the servants of Shimei's ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath.  And they told to Shimei saying, “Behold, your servants are in Gath.”

1Kin. 2:40   And Shimei rose and saddled his ass and went to Gath to Achish seeking his servants.  And Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath.

1Kin. 2:41   And it was told to Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned.

1Kin. 2:42   And the king sent and called for Shimei.  And he said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and give warning to you saying, ‘On the day of your leaving when you go anywhere, for certain you should know that surely you shall die,’ and you said to me, ‘The word is good.’  Have I heard?”

1Kin. 2:43   “Then why did you not keep the oath of the Lord and the commandment which I placed on you?”

1Kin. 2:44   Then the king said to Shimei, “You know all the wickedness that your heart is aware of that you did to David, my father.  So the Lord shall return your wickedness on your own head.”

1Kin. 2:45   “But king Solomon is blessed and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.”

1Kin. 2:46   Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada and he went out and fell on him that he died.  And the kingdom was established by the hand of Solomon.
