1Chr. 4:1   The sons of Judah were Perez, Hezron, and Carmi, and Hur, and Shobal.

1Chr. 4:2   And Reaiah son of Shobal begot Jahath, and Jahath begot Ahumai and Lahad.  These were the Zorathite families.

1Chr. 4:3   And these were of the father of Etam:  Jezreel, and Ishma, and Idbash -- and the name of their sister was Hazlelponi –

1Chr. 4:4   and Penuel, the father of Gedor, and Ezer, the father of Hushah.  These were the sons of Hur, the first born of Ephrath, the father of Beth-lehem.

1Chr. 4:5   And for Ashhur, the father of Tekoa, there were two wives, Helah and Naarah.

1Chr. 4:6   And Naarah bore Ahuzam for him, and Hepher, and Timeni, and Ahashtari.  These were the sons of Naarah.

1Chr. 4:7   And the sons of Helah were Zereth, and Zohar, and Ethnan.

The word in the parentheses is the name Zohar.  The yad prefix is an error.  It should be a vav as in the correction within the brackets.

1Chr. 4:8   And Koz begot Anub, and Zobebah, and the families of Aharhel son of Harum.

The name Koz appears no where else in the bible, and the identity of the individual is unknown.  Some scholars have suggested that it is a second name of one of those mentioned in the previous two verses.

1Chr. 4:9   And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabez saying, “For I bore in pain.”

The name Jabez also appears no where else in the bible, and the identity of the individual is also unknown.  Moreover, how the name is explained is rather inexplicable.  The name Jabez and the word for pain have a strange bearing to each other.  The root of the name is עבּץ, which means sorrow.  If the last two letters are interchanged, the root becomes עצב, which means pain.  Odd indeed!

1Chr. 4:10   And Jabez called to the God of Israel saying, “Would that indeed You would bless me and enlarge my territory and would Your ‘hand’ be with me and You would keep from evil so that it not be painful to me.”  And God brought to pass what he had asked.

1Chr. 4:11   And Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, begot Mehir; he was the father of Eshton.

1Chr. 4:12   And Eshton begot Beth-rapha, and Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of Ir-nahash.  These were the men of Recah.

1Chr. 4:13   And the sons of Kenaz were Othniel and Seraiah.  And of the sons of Othniel was Hathath.

1Chr. 4:14   And Meonothai begot Ophrah; and Seraiah begot Joab, the father of Ge-harashim, for they were craftsmen.

1Chr. 4:15   And the sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh were Iru, Elah, and Naam.  And of the sons of Elah was Ukenaz.

All the popular bibles give the name at the end of the verse as Kenaz, and almost none of them takes into account the first letter of the name, the vav.  I, being as literal (and naive) as I can be, included it in the name, making it Ukenaz.  The name Kenaz appears in v. 13 above, but we are not told who he is.  The name also appears in Gene. 36:11, but that must be a different individual.  There he is the son of Eliphaz; here he is the son of Elah.

1Chr. 4:16   And the sons of Jehallelel were Ziph, and Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel.

1Chr. 4:17   And a son of Ezrah was Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon.  And she bore Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah, the father of Eshtemoa,

1Chr. 4:18   and his wife, Hajehudijah, bore Jered, the father of Gedor, and Heber, the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel, the father of Zanoah, and these were the sons of Bithiah, daughter of Pharoah, whom Mered took.

1Chr. 4:19   And of the sons of the wife of Hodiah, the sister of Naham, was the father of Keilah, the Garmite, and of Eshtemoa, the Maacathite.

1Chr. 4:20   And the sons of Shimon were Amnon, and Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon.  And the sons of Ishi were Zoheth and Ben-Zoheth.

The word in the parentheses is the name [and] Tilon or Tolon.  Neither name appears elsewhere in the bible, so it’s impossible to determine the proper spelling only from the information contained in the bible.  Original Hebrew text had been altered in modern bibles (as it is here) by the addition of the vowel points known as niqqud, which were introduced circa 800 CE.  The Hebrew in Jewish bibles displays the name translated as Tilon as a mixed vowel and niqqud error.  I accept that conclusion, imagining that the scholars of the early middle ages recognized the name or made the most appropriate correction to the Hebrew.

1Chr. 4:21   The sons of Shelea son of Judah were Er, the father of Lecah, and Ladah, the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of the worker of fine linen belonging to the house of Ashbea,

1Chr. 4:22   and Jokim, and the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab, and Jashubi- lehem, but the chronicles are ancient.

1Chr. 4:23   They were the potters, and the inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah.  They dwelled there with the king in his work.

1Chr. 4:24   The sons of Simeon were Nemuel, and Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, Shaul.

1Chr. 4:25   Shallum was his son, Mibsam was his son, Mishma was his son.

1Chr. 4:26   And the sons of Mishma:  Hammual was his son, Zaccur was his son, Shimei was his son.

1Chr. 4:27   And Shimei's sons were sixteen, and daughters six, but for his brethren there were not many sons, so all their family did not increase as much as the children of Judah.

1Chr. 4:28   And they dwelled in Beer-sheba, and Molada, and Hazar-shual,

1Chr. 4:29   and in Bilhah, and in Ezem, and in Tolad,

1Chr. 4:30   and in Bethuel, and in Hormah, and in Ziklag,

1Chr. 4:31   and in Beth-marcaboth, and in Hazar-susim, and in beth-biri, and in Shaaraim.  These were their cities up to the reign of David.

1Chr. 4:32   And their villages were Etam, and Ain, Rimmon, and Tochen, and Ashan -- five towns.

1Chr. 4:33   And all their villages, which were surrounding these towns, were until Baal.  This was their dwelling places and the reckoning of their genealogy for them.

1Chr. 4:34   And Meshobab, and Jamlech, and Joshah son of Amaziah,

1Chr. 4:35   and Joel, and Jehu son of Joshibiah son of Seraiah son of Asiel,

1Chr. 4:36   and Elioenai, and Jaakobah, and Jeshohaiah, and Asaiah, and Adiel, and Jesimiel, and Benaiah,

1Chr. 4:37   and Ziza son of Shiphi son of Allon son of Jedaiah son of Shimri son of Shemaiah:

1Chr. 4:38   These enumerated by names were princes in their families, and the house of their fathers increased in abundance.

The Hebrew noun for house in this verse should probably be plural.  Its verb, increased, is plural.  And it makes more sense that the phrase should be and the houses of their fathers.

1Chr. 4:39   And they went to the entrance of Gedor as far as to the east of the valley to seek pasturage for their sheep.

1Chr. 4:40   And they found rich and good pasturage, and the land was expansive and undisturbed and quiet, for the dwellers from Ham were there in earlier times.

1Chr. 4:41   And these who are recorded by names came in the time of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and smote their tents and the Meunim who were found there, and exterminated them up to this day, and remained in their place, because the pasturage for their sheep would be there.

The word after the right parenthesis is the name the Meunim.  It is misspelled.  The correction before the left bracket changes the first yad to a vav.
