There are some remarkable things to note about this chapter:  (1) its repetition of the details of each of the twelve days of dedication, (2) the realization of how much the Israelites left Egypt with, if after only little more than a year, they still had this much, and of course much more with which to continue living and sacrificing, having previously given so much of their “loot” for building the tent of meeting and the Tabernacle, (3) the most remarkable of all, this chapter provides strong support for my contention that the prohibition expressed in Exod. 16:29 was meant for those who had gone out to hunt for manna on the first Sabbath, and was situational, not permanent.

I will address each of these points individually:

(1)  The repetitive description of the presentations of each of the chiefs of the tribes is very unusual, but not entirely unique.  What is unusual, for one, is that many of the repetitive verses are identical or almost identical in all twelve instances.  Do we have a different scribe here who has no reluctance to repeat himself, or is it only that coming up with at least one variation in each of twelve instances of the same words was too difficult?  There actually were some minor variations in some of the descriptions, but it didn’t seem deliberate.  All I know is that this example is rare in the Torah.  The only other occurrence of an oft-repeated verse is “And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,” which appears 45 times with no variation, always to introduce a new topic.

(2)  The Israelites gave so much jewelry, fine wood and fabrics, and hides for the Tabernacle and tent of meeting.  Yet they also had all of these animals and articles described in this chapter to present.  And we will learn that they had much more of all of these things, which they would sacrifice and offer in good will.  The Lord prepared for them very adequately, and that was probably another purpose for the ten plagues:  The Egyptians were finally so happy to see the Hebrews leave that they were willing to give anything away to them, and they apparently did.

(3)  In Exod. 16:29 Moses tells the people not to go out of their place on the seventh day.  But in this chapter the chiefs bring their presentations to the tent of meeting on each of twelve straight days.  During those twelve day there were either one or two Sabbaths.  Therefore, the chief (and his servants) who brought his offerings on the Sabbath had to leave his dwelling on that day.  If the prohibition in Exod. 16:29 were perpetual, he and his servants would be violating the Sabbath.  As a result of this understanding, I believe that the rabbinic restrictions on leaving one’s house or carrying something on the Sabbath are neither appropriate nor necessary.  But on the other hand, one might argue that the Sabbath restriction is set aside for spiritual activities.  All I can say in answer to this is that no where is this implied or stated by either the Lord or Moses.
