[Go Bottom]

Levi. 14:1  And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,

Levi. 14:2  “This shall be the law of the malignant individual in the day of his cleansing and he will be brought to the priest.”

Levi. 14:3  “Then the priest shall go out to the outskirts of the camp and the priest shall observe and see if the plague of malignancy is healed from the malignant person.”

Levi. 14:4  “Then the priest shall command a messenger and he shall get for the one to be cleansed two clean live birds and cedar wood and scarlet cloth and hyssop.

Levi. 14:5  “And the priest shall command, and he shall slaughter one bird in an earthen vessel by living [fresh, clean] water.”

See Gene. 26:19 for my reason for substituting fresh, clean for living.  I will make this substitution wherever the term living water appears (four times more in this chapter, once in Chapter 15, and once in Numb. 19:17).  Many other translations use running water here and in the other occurrences of this term.  But none of them use this translation for the term in Gene. 26:19.

Levi. 14:6  “He shall take the live bird, it and the cedar wood and the scarlet cloth and the hyssop, and dip them, with the live bird, into the blood of the bird that was slaughtered by the living [fresh, clean] water.”

Levi. 14:7  “And he shall sprinkle seven times on the one to be cleansed from the malignancy and pronounce him clean; then he shall release the live bird at the edge of the field.”

Levi. 14:8  “And the one who was cleansed shall wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe himself in water.  Then he will be clean, and then he may come in to the camp.  But he shall dwell outside his tent seven days.”

Levi. 14:9  “And it shall be on the seventh day, he shall shave off all his hair, his head and his beard and the brows of his eyes.  So he shall shave off all his hair, and he shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water; then he shall be clean.”                         [Return to Levi. 19:27]

Should we conclude from the wording of this verse that all body hair is to be shaven?  Bible commentators differ on this point.  Some say only visible hair must be shaved.  Others say all hair.  But even if only all visible hair is to be removed, shouldn’t the back of the hands and the arms be shaved as well?  This verse says all the hair – twice -- as does the previous verse, v. 14:8.  I’m inclined to believe that it means what it says.  I’m guessing that the head, face, and eye brows are mentioned specifically because some men might be less inclined to shave their beards and eye brows.  Men who have worn beards all their adult lives might feel more exposed by shaving their faces than any other parts of their body.

Levi. 14:10   “And on the eighth day he shall take two young rams without blemish, and one ewe yearling without blemish, and three tenths of an ephah of fine flour, a meal offering, mingled with oil, and one log of oil.”

Levi. 14:11   “And the cleansing priest shall set the man being cleansed, with those things, before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.”

Levi. 14:12   And the priest shall take one ram and bring for a guilt offering, and the log of oil, and wave them, a wave offering before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:13   “And he shall slaughter the ram in the place where he must slaughter the sin offering and the burnt offering, in a holy place; for as the sin offering, so the guilt offering; it is for the priest; it is holiest of holy things.”

Levi. 14:14   “And the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering, and the priest shall put on the tip of the right ear of the one being cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.”

Levi. 14:15   “And the priest shall take some of the log of oil and pour onto the left palm of the priest.”

Levi. 14:16   “And the priest shall dip with his right finger from the oil that is on his left palm and sprinkle from the oil on his finger seven times before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:17   “And from the rest of the oil that is on his palm the priest shall put on the tip of the right ear of the one being cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot by the blood of the guilt offering.”

Levi. 14:18   “And the remainder of the oil that is on the palm of the priest he shall put on the head of the one being cleansed, and the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:19   “And the priest shall offer the sin offering and make atonement for the one being cleansed of his uncleanness, and then he shall slaughter the burnt offering.”

Apparently the three animals that the person brought to the priest (v.14:10) were for a guilt offering, a sin offering, and a burnt offering.

Levi. 14:20   “And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meal offering on the altar, and the priest shall make atonement for him and he shall be clean.”

Levi. 14:21   “And if he is poor and there is no attainment of his hand, then he shall take one young ram, a guilt offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, and one tenth of an ephah of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal offering, and a log of oil,

Levi. 14:22   and two turtle doves, or two young pigeons, whichever his hand could attain, and one will be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering.”

Levi. 14:23   “And he shall bring them to the priest for his cleansing on the eighth day, to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:24   “And the priest shall take the ram of the guilt offering and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them, a wave offering before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:25   “And he shall slaughter the ram of the guilt offering and the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put on the tip of the right ear of the one being cleansed and on the thumb of his hand and on the great toe of his right foot.”

Levi. 14:26   “And the priest shall pour some of the oil on the left palm of the priest.”

This verse is a repetition of the instruction in v. 14:15.  If you’ll look back, you’ll see that once more the scribe has avoided duplicating the same Hebrew.  The same is true about vss. 14:27 and 14:28 compared to vss. 14:16 and 14:17.

Levi. 14:29   “And the rest of the oil that is on the palm of the priest he shall put on the head of the one being cleansed to make atonement for him before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:30   “And he shall offer one of the turtle doves, or of the young pigeons, from whichever his hand could attain.”

Levi. 14:31   “The sin offering shall be first of whatever his hand could attain, and the burnt offering shall be the other with the meal offering, and the priest shall make atonement for the one being cleansed before the Lord.”

Levi. 14:32   This is the law of the one in whom is a plague of malignancy whose hand could not attain in his cleansing.

Levi. 14:33   And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron saying,

Levi. 14:34   “When you will come to the land of Canaan, which I am giving to you for a possession, and should I put the plague of malignancy in a house of the land of your possession,

Levi. 14:36   “And the priest shall command that they shall empty the house before the priest shall go in to inspect the plague, so all that is in the house shall not be made unclean, and after this the priest shall enter to see the house.”

Levi. 14:37   “And he shall observe the plague and see if the plague is in the walls of the house, greenish or reddish hollow streaks, and their appearance is depressed in the wall,

Levi. 14:38   then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house and close up the house seven days.”

Levi. 14:39   “And the priest shall return on the seventh day, and look and see if the plague has spread in the walls of the house,

Levi. 14:40   then the priest shall command that they should remove the stones in which is the plague, and cast them out to the outskirts of the city to an unclean place.”

Levi. 14:41   “And the house be scraped inside throughout, and they shall spill out the mortar that they scrape off into the outskirts of the city in an unclean place.

Levi. 14:42   “And they shall take other stones and put in place of the stones, and he shall take other mortar and plaster the house.”

Levi. 14:43   “And if the plague returns and breaks out in the house after he removed the stones and after scraping the house and after plastering,

Levi. 14:44   then the priest shall go in and look and see if the plague has spread in the house, it is a penetrating malignancy in the house; it is unclean.”

Levi. 14:45   “So he shall break down the house, its stones and its timbers and all the mortar of the house, and carry to the outskirts of the city to an unclean place.”

Levi. 14:46   “Also, whoever will be going in to the house all the days that it is closed up shall be unclean till the evening.”

This verse relates back to v. 14:38.  But it also must apply to anyone entering once the house has been pronounced unclean (v. 14:44).  Thus the priest and those who break down the house will be unclean until evening on each day that they are there.

Levi. 14:48   “But if the priest will indeed go in and look, and he sees if the plague has not spread in the house after plastering the house, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed.”

Levi. 14:49   “And to cleanse the house he shall take two birds and cedar wood and scarlet cloth and hyssop.”

Levi. 14:50   “And he shall slaughter one of the birds in an earthen vessel by living [fresh, clean] water.”

Levi. 14:51   “And he shall take the cedar wood and the hyssop and the scarlet cloth and the live bird and dip them in the blood of the slaughtered bird and in the living [fresh, clean] water, and he shall sprinkle toward the house seven times.”

Levi. 14:52   “So he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the living [fresh, clean] water and with the live bird and with the cedar wood and with the hyssop and with the scarlet cloth.”

Levi. 14:53   “Then he shall release the live bird at the outskirts of the city at the edge of the field.  So he shall make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean.”

Levi. 14:54   This is the law for all kinds of plague of malignancy and for a scall,

Levi. 14:55   and for the malignancy of a garment and for a house,

Levi. 14:56   and for a swelling and for a scab and for a bright patch,

Levi. 14:57   to instruct in the day of uncleanness and in the day of cleanness.  This is the law of malignancy.
