2Kings 1

2Kin. 1:1   And Moab revolted against Israel after the death of Ahab.

2Kin. 1:2   And Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was injured.  And he sent messengers and said to them, “Go inquire with Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, if I will recover from this injury.”

2Kin. 1:3   But an angel of the Lord said to Elijah, the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel, you are going to inquire with Baal-zebub, god of Ekron?’”

2Kin. 1:4   “Then for this, thus says the Lord: ‘The bed on which you have gone up, you shall not come down from it, but you shall surely die.’”  Then Elijah departed.

2Kin. 1:5   And the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, “Why is it you have returned?”

2Kin. 1:6   And they said to him, “Someone came up to meet us, and he said to us, ‘Go return to the king who sent you and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord:  ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel you have sent to inquire with Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?  For this, the bed on which you have gone up, you shall not come down from it, but you shall surely die.’”

2Kin. 1:7   And he said to them, “Of what manner was the man who came up to meet you and said these things to you?”

2Kin. 1:8   And they said to him, “A hairy man with a belt of leather girded on his loins.”  And he said, “He is Elijah, the Tishbite.”

2Kin. 1:9   And he sent a captain of fifty, with his fifty, to him, and he went up to him and behold, he sat on top of the hill.  And he said to him, “O man of God, The king says, ‘Come down.’”

2Kin. 1:10   And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, “So if I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty.”  And fire came down from the sky and consumed him and his fifty.

2Kin. 1:11   And he considered, and he sent another captain of fifty, with his fifty, to him.  And he announced and said to him, “O man of God, thus says the king:  ‘Be quick, come down.’”

2Kin. 1:12   And Elijah answered and said to them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty.” And a fire of God came down from the sky and consumed him and his fifty.

2Kin. 1:13   And he considered, and he sent a third captain of fifty, with his fifty.  And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and made supplication to him and said to him, “O man of God, I pray you, let my life be valued, and the lives of your servants, these fifty, in your eyes.”

2Kin. 1:14   “Behold, fire came down from the sky and consumed two former captains of fifty and their fifty, but now let my life be valued in your eyes.”

2Kin. 1:15   And an angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.” So he rose and went down with him to the king.

2Kin. 1:16   And he said to him, “Thus says the Lord:  ‘The reason that you sent messengers to inquire with Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, was it because there is no God in Israel to inquire into His word?  For this, the bed on which you went up, you will not come down from it, but you will surely die.”

2Kin. 1:17   And he died as the word of the Lord that Elijah spoke.  And Jehoram became king in his place in the second year for Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because he had no son.

Because Ahaziah had no son, the house of Jehoshophat would rule both Judah and Israel for a time.

2Kin. 1:18   And the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written on the scroll of the chronicles of the days of the kings of Israel?
