1Kings 1

1Kin. 1:1   Now king David was old, stricken in years, and they covered him with garments but he could not get warmth for himself.                                                             [Return to 1Chr. 29:1]

1Kin. 1:2   So his servants said to him, “Let them procure for my lord, the king, a young virgin, and let her stay before the king and be a treasure for him, and let her lie in your bosom, so will be warm for my lord, the king.”

1Kin. 1:3   So they sought a fair young woman throughout the territory of Israel and found Abishag, the Shunammitess.  And they brought her to the king.

1Kin. 1:4   And the young woman was most fair, and she was a treasure for the king and she ministered to him, but the king did not know her.

1Kin. 1:5   Now Adonijah, son of Haggith, was exalting himself saying, “I am to be king.”  So he prepared chariots and horsemen for himself, and fifty men running before him.

Adonijah and Haggith was mentioned before in 2Sam. 3:4.  Adonijah was the fourth son born to David.  I wonder why he thought he would ascend the throne?

1Kin. 1:6   And his father had not troubled him in his life to say, “Why have you done like this?”  And also he was very handsome, and she bore him after Absalom.

1Kin. 1:7   Then there were his conferences with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar, the priest, and the followers of Adonijah helped.

1Kin. 1:8   But Zadok, the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and Nathan, the prophet, and Shimei and Rai and the mighty men who were David's did not come with Adonijah.

1Kin. 1:9   And Adonijah slaughtered sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zocheleth that is on the side of En-rogel, and called all his brethren, sons of the king, and to all the men of Judah, servants of the king.

1Kin. 1:10   But he did not call Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah and the mighty men and Solomon, his brother.

1Kin. 1:11   Then Nathan spoke to Bath-sheba, mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith reigns and our lord, David, does not know?”

1Kin. 1:12   “So now come, I pray you, let me give you advice that I may save your life and the life of your son, Solomon.”

1Kin. 1:13   “Come and go in to king David and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your handmaid saying, ‘Surely Solomon, your son, shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?’  Then why does Adonijah reign?’”

1Kin. 1:14   “Behold, while you are talking there with the king, then I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

1Kin. 1:15   So Bath-sheba went in to the king to the chamber. Now the king was very old and Abishag, the Shunammitess, served the king.

1Kin. 1:16   And Bath-sheba bowed and prostrated herself to the king, and the king said, “What is for you?”

1Kin. 1:17   And she said to him, “My lord, you swore by the Lord, your God, to your handmaid that Solomon, your son, ‘will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.’”

1Kin. 1:18   “But now behold, Adonijah reigns and you, my lord, O king, do not know.”

1Kin. 1:19   “Now he has slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance and called to all the sons of the king and to Abiathar, the priest, and Joab, captain of the host, but he did not call to Solomon, your servant.”

1Kin. 1:20   “And you, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are on you to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord, the king, after him.”

1Kin. 1:21   “Or it shall be when my lord, the king, is sleeping with his fathers, that I will be, I and my son, Solomon, offenders.”

1Kin. 1:22   Then behold, while she was talking with the king, then Nathan, the prophet, came in.

1Kin. 1:23   And they announced to the king saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!”  And he came before the king and lowered himself to the king on his face to the ground.

1Kin. 1:24   And Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me and he shall sit on my throne?’”

1Kin. 1:25   “For he has gone down today and slaughtered oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, then he called for all the sons of the king and for the captains of the host and for Abiathar, the priest, and behold, they are eating and drinking before him and say, ‘May king Adonijah live!’”

1Kin. 1:26   “But he did not call for me, I, your servant, or for Zadok, the priest, or for Benaiah son of Jehoiada or for Solomon.”

1Kin. 1:27   “Is this thing coming from my lord, the king, and you have not informed your servant who shall sit on the throne of my lord, the king, after him?”

The word in parentheses for your servant contains an extra yad in its spelling.  The correction, removing the yad, is in the brackets

1Kin. 1:47   “And the servants of the king also came to bless our lord, king David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make greater his throne than your throne,’ and the king bowed down on the bed.”

The fifth word from the end of the first line in the verse is normally considered to be misspelled.  The word is translated as your God.  The sages and commentators apparently assumed that the servants said, God, not your God.  Why they would decide so is beyond me.  There are many places in the bible where your God is used.  One of them is in v. 1:17 above, in which Bath-sheba, Solomon’s mother, says it to David.  I have assumed that the word is not in error.  I see no reason why David’s servants would acknowledge that God is their God before David, whom they greatly respected.  Out of that respect, they might readily see God as David’s God.

1Kin. 1:48   “Then also said the king like thus: ‘Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, Who has given today to sit on my throne, that my eyes are seeing.’”

1Kin. 1:49   Then all the guests who were for Adonijah were afraid and arose and went each along his way.

1Kin. 1:50   And Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon and he arose and went and took hold on the horns of the altar.

1Kin. 1:51   And it was told to Solomon saying, “Behold, Adonijah fears king Solomon and lo, he has laid hold on the horns of the altar saying, ‘Let king Solomon swear to me now to not slay his servant with the sword.’”

1Kin. 1:52   And Solomon said, “If he will be for a worthy one, none of his hair shall fall to the ground, but if evil is found in him, then he will die.”

1Kin. 1:53   Then king Solomon sent and they brought him down from the altar, and he came and prostrated himself to king Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
