1Chronicles 18

With several interesting deviations, some of the events of this chapter are also found in 2Samuel Chapter 8.  One of the deviations is that the name of Hadarezer (v. 3) is consistently spelled as Hadadezer in 2Samuel.  In addition, spellings for Tou (v. 9) and his son, Joram (v. 10), are found there as Toi and Hadoram.  Other significant deviations will be identified locally below.

1Chr. 18:1   And it was after this that David smote the Philistines and subdued them, then seized Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines.

1Chr. 18:2   And he smote Moab, and Moab became servants to David, bearers of tribute.

A major expansion of this verse is found in 2Sam. 8:2.

1Chr. 18:3   And David smote Hadarezer, king of Zobah, at Hamath, in his going to establish his hand toward the river Euphrates.

1Chr. 18:4   And David captured from him a thousand chariots and seven thousand horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers, and David rooted up all of the chariots, except he preserved from him a hundred chariots.

In 2Sam. 8:4, the chariot horses are houghed.

1Chr. 18:5   And Aram of Damascus came to provide help to Hadarezer, king of Zobah, and David smote among Aram twenty-two thousand men.

1Chr. 18:6   And David stationed [garrisons] in Aram of Damascus, and Aram became servants to David, bearers of tribute.  And the Lord was victorious for David everywhere that he went.

The word garrisons is not present in the Hebrew in this verse.  It is added to match the wording in 2Sam. 8:6 and in v. 13 below.

1Chr. 18:7   And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer and brought them to Jerusalem.

1Chr. 18:8   And from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadarezer, David took very much brass; with it Solomon fashioned the brass sea and the pillars and the vessels of brass.

Solomon is not mentioned in 2Samuel with relation to his use of the brass.

1Chr. 18:9   When Tou, king of Hamath, heard that David had smitten the entire force of Hadarezer, king of Zobah,

1Chr. 18:10   then he sent his son, Hadoram, to David, the king, to beg him for peace, and to bless him, because he had fought with Hadarezer and smitten him (though Hadarezer had abided each of the wars of Tou), as well as all kinds of articles of gold and silver and brass.

The word in the parentheses, translated as to beg, has a inappropriate vav.  The correction is in the brackets.

1Chr. 18:11   David, the king, also consecrated these to the Lord, along with the silver and the gold that he carried off from all the nations, from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

1Chr. 18:12   Also Abishai son of Zeruiah smote Edom in the valley of salt, eighteen thousand.

1Chr. 18:13   And he stationed garrisons in Edom, and all of Edom were David's servants.  And the Lord delivered David everywhere that he went.

1Chr. 18:14   And David was king over all of Israel, as he was executing justice and righteousness to all his people.

1Chr. 18:15   And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder.

1Chr. 18:16   And Zadok son of Ahitub and Abimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was the scribe.

The name of the scribe, Shavsha, is identified in 2Samuel as Saraiah.

1Chr. 18:17   And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethite and the Pelethite, and the sons of David were the primary ones supporting the king.
